I don't think it is fair to expect a 19yo to race Gerrans-like in the first monument he's fought for the win in. It's normal to think, I have something left, I'll pull (a bit less than Tadej) and see if I can hang on after.
It is different when you've come 2nd three times in a row. But first time? I think you just do what you like and see how it goes
In all likelihood the race plays out in the same way as it did, just like with MVDP at Flanders, but at least this gives people somthing to complain aout.

Clash of the titans! The Messiah couldn't prevent the Lord of Cycling from another victory but to me it's clear that top2 was taken by the king and the prince (future king). Congrats to both on great performances. Credit to Remco for getting 3rd after a hard finale for him.
I dunno Redoute climbing time yet but it seemed that Pogacar's tempo was absolutely sick. In 1 kilometer the gaps behind him exploded like on a longer climb (reaching 25-30''): it was mega impressive that Paul managed to match this thermonuclear attack. Eventually he was cracked by Pogi on Faucons but still what a ride.

After a surprising start the race fell back into the pattern of the UAE storybook. Seixas proved that he's not just another hype, but a true supertalent with huge potential for the future. All hail to the Frenchman, who did an incredible race for a 19-year old. However taking over the throne was not yet scheduled for today. Tadej Tyrannos still reigns supreme. My impression was that he tried to go solo on La Redoute, but soon accepted the situation and kept his second bullet for La Roche aux Faucons. That final acceleration after 250 km was too much to withstand.
For a while it looked like an outsider could take the third podium spot — like Uijtdebroeks or Verstrynge — but Evenepoel won the sprint, so we ended up with the three top favourites on the podium after all. Perhaps Skjelmose would have deserved it more, but defending a small lead against a group is always hard. It was a good race, but for a change of the guard it's still too early.

To add to that, first time round you are not thinking 'I am worse than him, I need to race accordingly'. You're thinking 'I can beat him'!
Very old-school scenario for Skjelmose: Attacks on the last climb, is caught, doesn't get a result, but at least he tried. That's what cycling was about before the 2020's.
Say what you want but all 3 guys on the podium delivered entertainment of the highest level.
Liege is still far from my favourite race but:
1. Pog did Pog things
2. Seixas gave all that love a good duel hope, and
3. Remco did exactly what he's good at: light up the race, get dropped like a stone and rise from the ashes.

Point seems moot. If Seixas rides less the gap is less but still over a minute. and Seixas would be fresher and not blow as hard. meaning he would still finish second. LBL is quite an honest race most of the time.
Might lose by 30 seconds instead of a minute. The winner was inevitable.

I’m not sure some people understand just how crazy Seixas’s ride was. He blew everyone else away bar Pogacar. At 19 years of age in a Monument. It’s bonkers.

I mean to the chasing group. Now Pogacar and Seixas had 2 minutes. if Seixas rides less the gap is maybe a minute 25 to the peloton. But he would have also be fresher later on, and so the peloton would not come back.
Bernal would have won this race if the 50 man group didnt get caught. He was better than Remco on the climbs.

I'd say an entertaining edition for my least favourite big race in quite some years. I planned to miss it, then there's the split. Seixas has serious potential to accumulate great number of haters in the near future, he's sooo good.
Even Google makes it hard to find 3rd place. Lol! If Remco does not feel he let Belgium down, neither do I.. Can't wait for TDF.To everyone ridiculing Evenpoel in the thread - including myself:

Have you looked at the comments directed towards Evenepoel, largely by Pogacar fans, in this thread (and in Catalunya)? Very poor forum behaviour and sportsmanship is not one-sided.
The way Seixas raced today sent a message to all involved, Pogacar within minutes of winning commented about Paul's strong pulls and Tadej sounded sincere when he thought Seixas was strong enough for a possible sprint finish. Seixas got a great result, upped his value for a contract, impressed everyone. Every rider he dropped will think twice before attacking him. He rode with confidence and swagger, if people were expecting him to act less than World Champion, TDF winner Pogacar got a look, kid thought he could do it, thought he had a shot.. He is @90% if it's in his mind..He was the highlight of the race in my opinion.

Quite possible. And with the form he is showing now, he will surely be a contender for the podium in the Giro

I was expecting Seixas wanting a full on 1vs1 battle against pogacar, and that's what we got.
I don't see how today showing changed much. Just confirmed what we all expected.
I do think today will be a learning moment for Seixas if he's willing to learn.
He either needs to be even stronger or ride smarter vs Pogacar once he gets into a 1vs1.

@hq87 You mentioned they broke the Redoute record by 13 seconds. Could you give us the source?
This would explain the massive gap between the mutants and the rest. I think Pogacar went full gas to the top (he said himself he went very deep) while in the previous two editions he didn't have to go so deep.
