Horrible news made worse as he seemed to be in superb form capable of getting a win. Most cycling fans will feel bad about this no matter our nationality. Christian Prudhomme put this into perspective.

I'm sorry but as a Cav fan, I can't accept that he ends his amazing career like this. He has no more interest for this season, I imagine that he will need the summer to recover completely. I only see one option: One more dance in the tdf next year, and then he retire. Jake stewart is coming to Astana,Morkov is free for next year and looking for something else. So my dream is a strong leadout with Jack/Bol/Morkov/Cav for a last TDF for the Manx Missile (and Morkov probably).
so Cav fell off the bike. Perhaps not the ending fans would have hoped for, but the boy gotta show some spirit and come back in spain later this year. Proper way to bow out.

As a Cav fan, how about thinking of his family, his kids, and what's best for him and what's best for them?
Now is a fine way to bow out. He goes out fighting to beat the record, coming close and then crashing out in the biggest race is the world leaving us to wonder what could have been. Unless he has changed his mind about retiring, now is a good time to do it.
I dont know, it depends, if they play it like theyve done their TdF series then no they didnt, if they are doing it like a proper documentary, actually you could make a better more emotional impact story from it I think, though it depends how much footage theyve recorded given its only week 1 and they might have expected 2 more weeks of stuff.
I'm not, and never have been a Cav fan, but today f**king sucked. He deserved to cross the line in Paris, and he deserved t contest stages to try to break the record. Gutted for him.

I'm no Cavendish fan, but I picked him in my CQ team, I knew that he would fight tooth and nails, he's a Massive Champion.
To his fans, yes, some of us are uncomfortable with is the "surpassing Eddy Merckx" rhetoric, when we all know that all 34s are not all equal. So there was unease, but no hostility.
Can he come back next year and get it? I wouldn't bet against Mark Cavendish.

I'm sure if his family want him to, he might do next years Tour off a reduced calendar maybe but I think it's the media and fans that want him to break the record more than Cav who's always seemed pretty indifferent to breaking it or not, he just likes winning bike races. Without the illness it would have been broken and extended anyway. Guess he has to see what the route is next year and how many sprint finishes. Obviously no Champs next year though.

& it would be so peak Cav to come back for 2024 & torture us all again.
Id have liked to think an experienced journalist/live broadcaster, such as Orla is, would actually be able to think of exactly the right words in the spur of the moment

There is no shame in equalling Eddy's record either. He might actually be more popular by graciously embracing that. It's not like it would be about the money at this point.

He's not the one with the lack of grace on the record. It's his fans and the sing-when-you're-winning Team GB crowd that keep banging on about that.
More popular than he already is right now? I think that would be difficult.

I'm thinking in the long run. He's at a popularity peak right now and it's a good time to be an eternal ambassador. Another year and fickle fans will be on to the next thing and he deserves his place in the long history of cycling.
That doesn't mean he can't think and plan it and see how form, mindset and family feel about it next year.
