Mattias Skjelmose: The Blond Assassin

I don't really like Skjelmose, but today he was strong and he deserved the win. I still think his solo effort to go after Pogacar was ill advised since the gap was less than half a minute at that point and Nys was still in the group, so chances were he would be off for a chasse patate. But him and Evenepoel ended up bailing each other out. After a 255km race, when you go to the finish with Pogacar and Evenepoel, you don't have to do any more work than he did. He did enough, not too much, not too little. Good race, in the future more of this, less yappin' and more doing.

The Ardennes classics are very well suited for Skjelmose. Just great to see him finally get a big big win. That sprint was perfect.

And what spring season so far by Lidl-Trek! And on wednesday we could see another great result either by Skjelmose or Nys or by both. :)

Arguably Fleche suits Nys better while Liege suits Skjelmose better.

Might make sense for Skjelmose to ride for Nys wednesday and not go too deep, in order to keep the powder dry for sunday.

Well, he was 2nd in FW 2023 so the race suits him quite well. But I agree, a relatively fresh Nys can win on Huy, that I'm not sure Skjelmose can do. Nys should be Lidl-Trek first card on wednesday and Skjelmose backup if Nys doesn't have the legs.

He may be a devout christian, but this midsummer I will be conducting my blót at the Bog of Scales.

I had no idea he was until you just told me - Danes tend to not speak about religion much.

But I found this article, from last year (in Danish) that some may find interesting.

Since he's a devout Catholic, it seems like a missed opportunity he was not nicknamed "Crusader" when he rode in the Dannebrog jersey ;) - But then such a nick name may be polarising these days :)

Yeah, but he has changed his riding style and training since then, more geared towards longer climbs, in order to become a GC rider.

As a consequence he isn't quite as punchy as he was in 2023, and these days you will often see him start long climbs more like a diesel, and then catch up further up the climb.

He's still pretty punchy, but no longer a specialist on the short sharp climbs - which Nys is (but he tends to die when the climbs get longer).

And with Ciccone they have another card to play in Liege.

Well, considering Remco being Muslim-adjacent I guess you could call Skjelle Denmark's greatest Saracen-slaughterer since Ogier le Danois... :grimacing:
I'd appreciate you if included the whole quote, instead of trying to make me seem worse than I am.

Other than that I am not debating that topic any further, as it only took 1 post for it to get contentious, which was not the intention.

Yeah, could have been funny dude ;):):p

You took it too far dude, so it came off as irony.

All good - let's leave the topic alone :)
I must admit, I'm not quite sure what's even going on anymore. I guess you went a bit edgy, and I thought "edgy? I can do edgy!" Dunno... fwiw I didn't mean to imply anything about your intentions. I'd also say that my comment was "ironic"..?

Wow, what a win. To beat Pogacar and Evenepoel fair and square like that? He was simply the best rider today. Very impressive!
Well, what does ‚best rider‘ mean here? I think he was the first rider to complete the course (as you said fair and square) and thus of course the deserving winner. If that‘s your definition of best rider I agree. If you say that he was the best rider in the sense that he had the best cards to win today, that‘s clearly not true.
