The idea that Evenepoel wouldj ust drop Skjelmose if he didn't cooperate doesn't make any sense.
Because he tried and didn't.
While we on the internet find our opinions of the up most importance, the 2 riders involved spoke quickly and candidly immediately following the race with Skjelmose basically saying that he was happy to survive, nothing about seriously having the juice to jump Remco ever, not from 20, 10,5 k out and he waited until Remco jumped and did his best to cover the move,
Both riders knew from many kilometers (@30 minutes from the finish) that Remco was the strongest guy in the field. He was obviously impressive.. Skjelmose rode a fantastic race by doing enough work to reduce his defense, decision making to be against one rider instead of making things complicated.
In the end he still had a decent sprint against an evident superior Remco.. When you are racing @150+ world tour pros and you can work out that it's you against one other guy @200 meters from the finish, that in itself is impressive, Mattias rode a brilliant race in every way.
