There's just so much more money in football...

Thanks. That gives me the general overview I was looking for. In fact, most of your posts I find well worth reading; a nice contrast to the standard boring irrational hysterics.

Seriously, I would rather take my saddle off my seatpost and go ride trails than to watch a baseball game. And I mean with no lube either.

..something just made me tighten my glutes?????

For this post, I'll stick to MLB as it is the current season, and has had a ton of PED fails since they started testing for them a five years ago. There has been around 40 players suspended by MLB since 2005, for some form of PED use. 6 minor league players got suspened last week, and news about Big Papi, and Manny from 2003 "broke" from the list of 104 that failed in the pre-test..testing. That is a huge number of players, if this was cycling, it would be in the press big time.

Michael Wilbon of ESPN, Washington Post fame, said during the Tour after the Rasmussen "events" and after Ricco came back positive he said on his show PTI "They should shut the sport down" But when it comes to sports reports meal tickets and what their network pays to show, very little is said about the problem MLB has with steroid use. They report the big names that get caught, but then say...well that erea is over, it was what is was and so forth. After Manny got caught, ESPN aired his at-bats in the minors league for his 10 game warm-up, like some hero was returning from injury. The netwoks pay way to much money, around a Billion dollars per year, to show basball, to make a big issue out of PED use. They play it down, make light of it, and try to "focus on the games". Thats just what they program the american people to do as well, and for the most part its working.

I asked Wilbong one day when he was in Philly, if they should shut baseball down as well, since there are so many guys failing test in the last few years. He just laughed and was like no shot that will happen, or some stupid comment, since he had put his foot in his big mouth about cycling, he left my area of the bar.

oh and Food for Brains, you should watch baseball, its a great sport, the drama in October is awesome. But then you would have to go to baseball message boards as well, and then your head would explode trying to post on all of them as well....stick to the seat post idea I guess.

Excellent post. And i love that you confronted the idiot as well.
This righteous indignation toward certain sports & individuals and then completely ignoring the same behaviour in other sports makes me want to puke.
Reading the LA times today certain sportswriters are going off on the local fans for coddling Manny etc And yet you never see them write about the cheating that is "legal". I find that highly unethical. They know that athletes are getting misdiagnosed in order to legally take PEDs with a prescription and a TUE. they have their little faux crusade to clean up sports, it is disgusting.

Wilbon has gotten much too comfortable in his PTI chair. He's gotten very lazy. He and TK used to make an honest effort to learn about events outside of the mainstream, now he is arrogant and dismissive. i actually look forward to days when someone else sits in his chair, some of it is the comments you mentioned which i remember vividly and won't soon forget.

go phils! is it too early for E A G ....?:D:D:D

What is missing in this discussion is the fact that the NFL, MLB, NHL, etc. are all organized much differently than cycling. These are huge corporations who sell the rights to broadcast their games for hundreds of millions, maybe even billions of dollars over the years. These "corporations" have huge public relations groups that put a spin on everything. The NFL is the best...there is no way that there are not at least 75% of players taking illegal substances...no way!! But the fans really don't care!!! They just want to see the exciting games. Sure there is disappointment when a player gets caught...but it is quickly forgotten as they only miss 4 games on the first offense. In baseball, they have had a tougher time...their PR machine never got in gear, and their commissioner is an idiot!! Funny thing, I don't recall many NHL players getting busted? But EPO would definitely be a good thing for those guys.

Cycling is doing something...or at least trying...or making it look like they are trying. They are not really spinning anything and in the US I would not listen to Wilbon, Jim Rome, or any other reporter talk about cycling...they are clueless.

To get in line with TFF...I would rather my nuts get caught in my chainring than watch a baseball game on the TV, but I do love going to a game live!!

while I cant comment on the US situation, what your describing does sound similar to what Australia deals with in relation to AFL and Rugby. The public is totally ignorant about the amount of PED's that are used. While testing is done for illicit drugs (and currently there are some massive problems here) much of the testing for PEDs is in house and I suspect useless. Any former AFL (Aussie Rules) player will tell you of steriod use that is rampant and the use of powerful painkillers is celebrated.

Then my non-cycling mates like to tell me that 'cyclists are all on drugs'. Makes me think good for them everyone else it anyway.:(
