Saw this article about him in Macleans magazine the other day:
http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/10/12/the-political-genius-of-rob-ford/

So he's also a convicted drunk driver and an alleged wife beater. Who suggests that speed bumps indirectly endanger us. Ok. Seems classy in this clip though. Love bit about eating beef and potatoes at a lunch provided by the Asian community and keeping his face buried in the chow when important people stand to leave.

blame the victim

Omg that is seriously one of the most stupid things to say... their own fault... i might call it so if you do bike stunts... but if you get hit on the road its not really your own fault... ( He should cycle some more ugly fat guy he is )

Blaming the victim is so common you hardly notice it many times. Criminals do it all the time, their lawyers as well, corporations, politicians, drivers, ...

I am reminded of a story I read in a local French paper many years ago.

A 90 year old man had been killed while taking a walk on a small country road. He had been run over by some farm machine driven by a teenager who evidently was driving without any visibility of the road ahead of him.

The newsman quoted a neighbour (actually it might have been a policeman in charge of the enquiry, not a neighbour) who blamed not the teenager but the family of the deceased for letting him go for a walk in the first place.

Apparently the newsman agreed as he did not add any commentary to make me think that was not the case.

Ah crap. Speaking as a native Torontonian who could not vote because I am out of the country, I extend a brief apology to those who now view Toronto as being overrun by overweight troglodytes drunk with power.

I assure you I would never have voted for the walking mound of cholesterol, though that doesn't change the fact that Rob Ford is now mayor. To exacerbate matters, his brother Doug was elected for the council seat he vacated by running for mayor. I may have no choice but to arm myself with a rusty bike chain in case things begin to get medieval.

When Rob Ford announced he was running for mayor my friends and I all got a good laugh. The thought of a simple-minded loudmouth actually winning the election was inconceivable.

To see what has transpired over the past ten months or so is truly stunning and sad beyond words. People I know actually cried as the results starting pouring in.

Unbelievable.

Have you forgotten about Mayor Mel??

Sad news for Toronto, though. Ford's views on bikes are nearly as unfortunate as several other aspects of his behaviour.

The only way to deal with this sort of attitude is to stay on message and focus on the following generation. Guys like Ford are the results of at least three generations of brain-washing from the auto-industrial-complex. The tide is already receding from that culture of car supremacy. Soon enough, judging from the multimodal oscillations which propagate through his torso at every slight movement of his body, Ford will be dead, and that will be one less voice of car-obsessed idiocy we need to deal with.

On this point, there is an excellent documentary called "Taken for a Ride" that chronicles how GM worked in the US to supplant public transportation (in the form of electric trolly cars) and replace it with cars and gasoline buses. Pretty disturbing...

As a resident of Toronto, the prospect of Rob Ford occupying the mayoral chair is as appealing as resting my face on a burning stove.

The man is truly idiotic. Sadly, his populist everyman approach seems to be working. "He talks like us," said one Ford supporter.

The most depressing thing about all this is the fact so many people proudly identify with a complete and utter idiot.

Anyhow, on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of Torontonians who despise the man, I'm sorry. I'm really, really sorry.

Wow, that sounds just like modern American politics. Sorry to see it has spread :(

Yes, they often appeal to the lowest common denominator for some reason, perhaps the most easily manipulated?

Today I came across the following quote while reading reactions to Ford's victory on a Toronto-based message board.

"Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" -Isaac Asimov

It's going to be a long four years.

Good point squares.

But the alleged drunk driver and wife beater is also an alleged crack cocaine user. Good thing he's not a cyclist, the poor Torontonians can only put up with so much.
