Measuring Time Gaps Tour De France

I assumed that the time gaps between the break away group and the peloton was measured by the guys in yellow on the yellow motor bikes, by going ahead to a spot, stopping and measuring the time between the groups, then riding past the peloton to the break away group and showing them on the board.

On the SBS TV coverage, the gaps are updated every 30 secs, so is it done using the bike GPS transpoders? and estimated group speeds?

+1 they then feed that info into a computer that spits out what km the catch will occur. plus there is also official check points which are most talked about in the TT
