Melbourne, Geelong Peeps - Best place to watch the UCI Champs from?

Hi.

Heading over from NZ to take in the World Champs. Staying in Melbourne Town and will take the Train out to the Races each day.

Not keen on paying the $225 for the Spectator Area.
Can any of you locals recommend a good spot to set up and view the race out on the course in Geelong.

Would you expect the top of "The Ridge" and surrounds to be packed out?

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions offered.
Cheers.

Dont rely on the trains Vline are not going to good at preasent but if you have your bike with you Queens Park hill will be a good spot.
Its easy enough to ride to the finish if you want.

Otherwise the geelong Water front is not far from the station.

good luck

There will be a bit of pressure on VLine to make sure the trains are reliable for this event. I think a good portion of the crowd will be relying on the train.

Limit on amount of bikes on each train, which will surely be reached on this weekend.

Not sure how far you normally ride but it is only a 90km ride down to Geelong if you go down through Little River / back of You Yangs etc. I'm sure you won't be by yourself if you pick that option. Maybe find out the route the Melb - Warrny follows and ride down those roads, that race pops out the backside of Geelong from Melbourne.

Do you know if we can take Bikes on the train??
I am flying down from Brisbane for the race and have been checking out the details for the train.

It says on their website during the peak time there will be trains every ten minutes and you MUST have reservations for catching these trains. It also states that you can't take a bike on the train at these peak times.

Good luck just leave plenty of time if you are catching a flight out straight after the race.

And the website advises NOT to ride from Melbourne to Geelong during the WCs due to extra traffic and road closures.

Here are 3 scans of spectator information from something I was given from yesterdays Geelong Advertiser. Probably on line somewhere too but oh well..

I was thinking that halfway up challambra court would be the place anything will happen and with the park nearby having a screen, I figure 21-22 minute lap.. you can get back to watch most of it between laps. It should be noted that according to the street directory montpellier park is basically backing on houses and only has limited frontage after the climb to the actual race area.

(On the third page it mentions coaches that can take small numbers of bikes for those who can't understand why the trains can't take bikes.(and a bus can))

Just an FYI for our international visitors, my local magpie has declared swooping season open, so remember to bring a quality helmet and protective eyewear. (The helmet of course helps protect from dropbears too).
