When even the tiniest of amounts can be detected, and you know 100% you will be tested if you podium, it doesn't make sense to charge up on clen for a race, be that in China, Japan or anywhere else.

For training, yes. To lose the last bit of weight before your goal of the season, yes. In the off season to control you weight, yes. In China (with amounts big enough that you'll test positive) to win (and thereby 100% be tested) Japan Cup, no ****ing way in hell.

Yes, i understand that he did not get his win reinstated, but he didn't get banned for Clen PEDing so imo he won, not the race, he beat the ban, hence he won (not the race).

I doubt Mick Rogers gives a fig about Japan Cup at this point.

Wonder what Fuyu Li is thinking? Given a two year ban in 2010 for Clenbuterol. Yet Rogers goes free. How is that fair?

In the end the Chinese federation banned Li and that was political as China preferred to throw him under the bus rather than accept his contamination claim. That in my mind is unfair to Li His Clen positive could have been tossed out but his federation would not consider it, I think to preserve face and not out of any consideration of the facts.

He's on a team owned by Oleg Tinkov who supports the use of doping and the head DS is Bjarne Riis. And Rogers himself has been brought into contact with the Freiburg investigation and Dr Ferrari. I think it's highly unlikely he ever raced clean.

But, as hfer07 said, he lost a dozen wins (including 2 GTs) and millions of euros due to the whole clen affair (IIRC Gazzetta estimated it could have cost him as much as €20mln)

Well that's the UCI for you - I cant vouch for them.

I'll tell you what though - it wouldn't be difficult to really put the pressure on any athlete (cycling or not) with OOC testing. 1 or 2 days here and there is no good. 2-3 times a day (or more) from 5am to 11pm, randomly when they are in a 'hard to get to' location (and not every day but randomly then as well) would really focus their minds. They'd never know when testers might turn up.

Of course it wouldn't be cheap but unfortunately that would have to be the price to pay - a (much bigger) slice or TV money, etc. would need to be taken.

I think two hours. During those hours they can get tested so the officials have to know where they are. I think

Away from Flèche Wallonne, the UCI has just announced that Michael Rogers (Tinkoff-Saxo) will not be suspended for his positive test for clenbuterol at the Japan Cup last year. Although the Australian has been stripped of that victory, he will not serve a ban as the UCI “found that that there was a significant probability that the presence of clenbuterol may have resulted from the consumption of contaminated meat from China – where he had taken part in a race before travelling to Japan.” The full story will follow on Cyclingnews shortly.

I think so. I didn't realise that until the Henao reporting - he had agreed to the 8-9 slot but they were lost and phoned up. So in a normal day anytime after that is fair game? What a load of BS.

And the reason I am surprised is that I think I read last year that Froome was tested 3 times on the rest day. Good - proves they were doing something right.

Well TBH it was more of a generalistic comment about testing the leader and his deputies. Personally I would target test all team leaders on a daily basis and their main deputies very regularly. And again randomly maybe based on either their position in the team or on how much work they have done up front on that day. Something so that its not predicatble or manipulatable. None of the big guys ever get caught mid-race any more- they're far too clever for that. To properly combat doping in the new era you'd need constant offseason checks. Anyway IMO we've already moved way beyond blood doping and into gene therapy and its ilk, which is definitely not testable during a race, if at all.

I'm not sure gene doping is testable at all. However I would be very surprised if its in use at all let alone widely. My understanding is that is very expensive, very untested and very unknown in terms of effect / side effect (although that last point may not stop it).
