Yea, just saw this posted like it was a simple, happy family moment, and then what I figured was just some kind of cruel joke. Turns out it was, but it was life's cruel joke, not any person's.

The guy's been a key part of some of the most memorable race stages in living memory, from the start to the end of his career - Pajáres 2005, Aprica 2010, Gardeccia 2011, Sant'Anna di Vinadio 2016 - and he was riding well in Trentino that it's almost harder to fathom and comprehend that he's gone, because we saw the guy full of life and performing with the absolute best just yesterday.

This. You'll never know when it is over.

So many tragedies we've seen down the road and it strikes hard each time. Rest in peace Michele. Cant believe this has happened but then again it is life and all you can do is to make each moment matter.

I will miss you. Many will.

This must be the nightmare of every pro rider and their spouse/partner/kids/family. Horrible, horrible.

Terribly sad news. Thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and team. He always came across as one of the good guys of the peloton. Hard to fathom that we were watching him riding so well just yesterday and now he is gone. That picture of him with his boys is truly heartbreaking. RIP Michele.

I'm still in shock. His performance in Tirreno '07 still is close in my heart: always attacking, always fighting. All those great memories on the bike, he was sincerely one of most inspiring riders in the mountains.

But most of all: a wonderful person. A guy who was loved by the peloton because of his humor, his smile, his way of being.

He will missed on this planet

I am in shock and disbelief since this morning, what a cruel tragedy ! And to think he just came back from the Tour of Alps yesterday, spent a nice evening playing with his twin sons, and the next morning he is gone... Absolutely heartbreaking !

Scarponi was one of the funniest guys in the peloton. Always in good mood and always smiling. Also a very strong rider and one of the best domestics in the World.

I still can't believe this happened. I didn't know him personally but it feels like we lost a good friend.
