Horrible news.
One of the nicest and funniest guys in the peloton. Recently he said that he thought about moving to Switzerland or Monaco a few years ago, but that he just couldn't do it, the connection that he had with the region where he was born and raised was just too strong.
I feel sad for his kids and his wife.
Just rewatched what I think is Scarponi's best triumph, the 2010 Tirreno-Adriatico stage to Chieti. Aprica is most famous and was the best race, no doubt, but this one is, to my mind, the best way to remember Michele as a bike racer.
Never met him but feels like i lost a friend. Because he made me laugh many times, his antics and interviews plus his smile. I never saw him sad/angry for more than 5 sec.
So sad to go this young.
Take care out there on the road peeps. Remember that many don't care that you have a family at home, be all eyes.
This sort of terrible news you can never fully take in when first reading, he was part of so much of our cycling viewing that you knew you'd miss him once he retired, he deserved to have that great send off from the cycling community, he deserved to be able to live for years with his family.
In me il tuo ricordo è un fruscìo
solo di velocipedi che vanno
quietamente là dove l’altezza
del meriggio discende
al più fiammante vespero
tra cancelli e case
e sospirosi declivi
di finestre riaperte sull’estate.
Solo, di me, distante
dura un lamento di treni,
d’anime che se ne vanno.
E là leggera te ne vai sul vento,
ti perdi nella sera.
The risks these guys take while racing is where one might believe a slight possibility of tragedy exists. But a training ride?? Shades of Amy Dombroski.... something no one is ever prepared for.
Just read the news. I feel so terrible, cycling is a sport with a lot of horrible news, this one is so hard to take, words can't contain right now. I love you, Michele, and you will be missed, always
