Having a chance at the top spot is better than top 10 at best. That's what Pidcock did.
As I said, i do not believe the peloton ever comes back after the poggio, if i'm pidcock i'm certain Pogacar will motor me to at least second place. So second place from that point would already be in the bag in my mind. meaning only way to go is up from there.

Somebody told poor Tom it had been just 4 cm and he was devastated.
Its tough but he gave it his best shot, there is nothing more he could have done other than maybe not being on the inside in the sprint. He rode pretty much a perfect race. Small margins. Hopefully he gets another chance in the future in this race.

As I said, if Pidcock doesn't work, Pogi would slow down as well and peloton come back.

Which i why i said agree to disagree.

You believe Pogacar sits up in a race he wants to win badly with only Pidcock in his wheel, i do not. I think he does whatever needs be done to stay ahead of the peloton. So that he can sprint for the win against only Pidcock.

Pidcock also wants to win, hence he maximised his chances to get a shot at the top spot.

Winning a monument would be huge for Pidcock. Pog still have many such wins.

Both had a lot of interest to see it was either of them that would get the chance to win.
Exactly! We have guys like Pedersen whose dream is to win a Monument! Pidcock wanted it that much, he was confident in his sprint and didn’t want to risk getting caught by the peloton, so he did what he had to do. Better man just won, and fairplay to all the riders that made the race.

Final attempt at changing people their mind.

If Pogacar has the exact same time gap after Poggio but solo. Does he motor to a win without Pidcock taking turns? I say yes. Do i believe Pogacar rather sprints against Pidcock alone even if Pidcock has stayed in his wheel after the Poggio or sprint against the chasing Peloton after letting them come back? I would say he rather sprints for the win against Pidcock. If like me you believe both of these things to be so, then it is in Pidcock interest to save his legs as much as possible. Stay in Pogacar wheel, so to have as fresh a legs as possible for the sprint.

Yes both had interest. But that does not mean Pidcock played it as best as he could. He should have saved his legs more for the sprint to capitalise

Pogacar would figure he loses the sprint if Pidcock sucks his wheel after the Poggio

And he would figure he has even less chance against the chasing peloton. When choosing between two evils, you choose the lesser evil. The one that gives him a chance.

Like i said. If you believe both of these things to be true, it was in pidcock interest to save his legs as much as possible

Pog figures he has 10-20% chance of winning the sprint if he lets Pidcock suck his wheel - so he's unlikely to win

It's rather easy to understand Pidcock did what was best for him having a chance to win.
Again not if you agreee with both thoughts. You do not agree with both thoughts. But if you do , which aint that farfetched a scenario , then he did not. I never believe pogacar allows the peloton back regardless if Pidcock sits his wheel
