Of course he can, more than most people can, like many other races. But I got the feeling, as I watched it and I could be very wrong, that only after he tried it now he felt how strong the lottery aspect was.

I think that what makes this a really fun race in the end and I think it will only make him want to win this race even more in the future, because of the lottery aspect.

Hopefully. You have to admit guy is a race maker, well, he makes them no-race sometimes, too.

It's a question of attainable objectives & whether they're predictable or not.

Roglic is one of the two best GC stage riders in the world, ergo his own objectives are way more achievable than WvA's, i.e. winning Paris-Nice isn't a lottery. There's danger of course like every bike race but it's manageable.

Monuments on the other hand are straight-up carnage with zero second chances.

Some takes:

Amazing descent by Mohoric, deserved win!
Wout marking Pog almost too well. It would have worked if not for other attacks.
MVDP is back baby! He is ready to win some races.
Pogacar was a marked man, he couldn't gain an inch today. And he backed off on the descent after he saw how muck risk Mohoric took.
Belgians again let down by Roglic. When will they get a break!

One of my favorite MSRs in a while, at least since Nibali's win, and probably since the super wet one.

I'm always impressed by SKA's sense of tactical timing, he came the closest to breaking away on the Poggio and actually drew the winning selection. I think he was the one guy who realized that Stuyven was the wheel to follow last year, too.

Can't remember the last time I saw someone try so many attacks on the Poggio. It's the young cyclists' special where they try that kind of stuff. The more experienced ones just saw that there was a headwind.

If you want the motorbike, you have to be at the front. Especially on a descent where it's very difficult for the motos to clear the riders. Everyone should know this.

Roglic probably gave WVA his best chance to win, when WVA went with Pogacar and Roglic sat up to create a gap. One of the few true team tactics in the finale. Not sure how he cost WVA the race, it was simply a case of the favorites marking each other out.

also this race remains impossible to predict. i was sure we'd have a bunch sprint because of the, uh, "pace" of the peloton in the last year or so- i figured it'd be like those 00s editions where it was impossible to drop anyone on the Poggio, and the likes of Cipo and Cavendish won. but this is MSR and you can't predict it.

Nobody ever talks about it, but Nibali had the Moto draft on the way up, and was just a good enough descender to hold that gap all the way down.

Mohoric got the gap on the descent. If anything, the Moto was impeding him.

It’ll be a good day for races like MSR when all camera work can be done by drones, and race vehicles can just get out of the road during downhill portions of the race.

Yeah, though that was always going to happen with Nibali, lol.

Speaking of "those cycling things" I loved it when Sagan dropped with a mechanical and was back in the peloton like 2KM later. I'm certain he and his car weren't doing anything untoward during that off-camera time!

There were also complaints during that 2019 Tour de France stage to Saint-Etienne with the fugitive duo of Alaphillippe and Pinot, though I also thought that was a bit overstated because it was during a technical descent where clearing the riders would have been tough.

It's also nigh impossible for Pogacar to get away on the climb. Even at the top the front 4 had like a 3 second gap. And this is after a race that has been ridden perfectly for Poga. Super hard pace on Cipressa and a small group on the Poggio.

He'd need to get away unattended, which is unlikely, or descend like Mohoric, which, is also unlikely. And he can't win in a sprint with people like VDP, Pedersen etc there (yes he did beat Pedersen adn Van Aert but they did a lot)
