I guess he could have tried another attack, but I also think people would have been quicker to jump to his wheel than they were with Sobrero. He probably also needed a little pause after leading most of the descent although I have to admit that this opens up the question why he was leading on the descent in the first place. Yeah, not a tactically great race for him, but I still think the majority of the tactical blame lies on the team and not on him

Monument season really kicked in.
Must say I've been fully enjoyed from the gun to the finish.
Milano - Sanremo being fully merciless as in most editions.
90% coffee pleasure and enjoyment of the beautiful surroundings here for 6 hours.
Myself drove the last half of the route by car during summer holidays now many years ago and stayed 7 great days at the Hotel Ariston Montecarlo with the swimming pool at the bottom of Poggio climb, borrowed the hotel's bikes (+20kg heavy 3-gear bikes and of course tried climb several times, as well and other climbs in the area - I was flying on my local hills with my far lighter race bike back home
).
And then the last 10% with full excitement and the ups and downs.
Can't hide my disappointment with Ganna's mechanical at most crucial moments.
Had visualized in dreams Ganna following Mohoric's wheel in an escape on the last part of the descent with Ganna winning a two man sprint. But it was not ment to be.
Just as I, as a Dane, could not hide my concern about Mads Pedersen's "strongman demonstration" on Cipressa, not saving everything for il Gran Finale. However, he would not stand as the winner anyway as the final unfolded. Not with Bling and Jasper back in the front group.
That's part of the ruthlessness of this race - and I love it for that.
The talks and writings about changing the route and spicing it up with a sea of extra climbs.
A polite "no thanks" from here.
This is the classic harbinger of spring, La Primavera. Just as this monument should be.
As the riders say - the easiest monument ridden, but the hardest to win.
Nota bene: Only objection from here would be to place the start in Milan instead of Pavia - hope they are back with the classic start in Milan next year.
Congratulations to Alpacin. They ran the race smartly.

Oh well, at least now Emirates can go back to bullying plumbers at Italian 1.Pro's so they can call themselves the best team.
Bettiol climbing really well—was right with Pogacar and MVDP on Pog’s 1st attack and then was a bit out of position when Pog attacked again.

I think Philipsen's presence changed the end of the race. Maybe otherwise MVP would've helped Pog on the descent more and they would've been top2 (or top3 with Pidcock).

Answer(s) were obvious, Del Toro in the front and was big part of going from 2:12 to 18 seconds at the base of the climb. Del Toro early bad habits erased, he does some lily pad style, starts from the back and uses riders in front of him as micro targets and passes as many as possible to finally end up in front. Tirreno Adriatico. Del Toro and the team need to determine how he sets pace from the back,he doesn't. Almost doomed him in Australia. Pretty impressive evolution, racing at the back to racing at the front in a couple of months as a first year pro. Take away.. He can follow directions, and was part of successful tactics to Pogacar in front, chasing and keeping leader out of trouble.
Went to a super difficult race, world class outstanding field, and held his own.. Reason after reason that UAE spent the effort developing a young racer and solid contributor to the team. Don't know you would have gotten more from Brandon McNultey. From my comments I am impressed with the 20 year old, from where I am sitting, he has some solid building blocks for his future. Definitely don't think that UAE phoned it in and wasted a roster spot..far from it

PS: Apparently Philipsen, Pog and Matthews are all good pals and train and hang out together a lot. Philipsen also was in UAE for some time.

That's a WAY harder finale; as much as I like Bettiol as a dark horse to surprise I don't think he's going to be able to live with Pog and MVDP at the end. That said, it's why they actually hold the races; if I had to pick anyone beside the big two it would be him or Mads...

Matthews overtook Stuyven, and AFTER that manoeuvre, he started swerving to his left because he knew there was a big gap. That's where Philipsen was overtaking him. Maybe you should look at it again.
The door was not closed, lol, there was a gap that could fit 2 to 3 guys, i just rewatched the sprint.
