my god is this who he's going to be?? like tom boonen and hushovd making up exuses for every failure??

The guy is 20. He won at worlds. Won PR U23.US Nat champ.Just won the TT at one of the few big races at the US. Twitter makes everybody look like a complete tool. When 1000's of people wait for their would be idol to mass text something stupid you can't help but enter daily dribble. He should just look at Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber and text things about yummy smoothies at Jamba Juice to keep non cycling fans happy. Race fans will be happy to see him win races. I hope soon that racers find that twitter and daily updates to their facebook status have huge down sides after they are really tired after training and racing...or just let a publicist type in whit on the riders behalf

That struck me as more of "Look how I screwed up." then an excuse.

Phinney is what he is. I good young rider in the flats with a bit of a sprint, a good short TT/Prologue and a decent longer TT. He's shown no climbing chops at all.

People saying he'll contend in the GC of a GT simply haven't looked at his results. It's hard to imagine him making that sort of change even at his current young age. I could see him turn into a sprinter who can TT and Cobble okay... say like a Hushovd. I can imagine him becoming a cobbled rider with a bit of a sprint or TT... say like Hincapie. And I can imagine him becoming mostly a TT specialist... something like a Svein Tuft.

But something like Hincapie is about the limit I can imagine from him when it comes to climbing.

It must of been a bit alarming for his fans to see him to be burned off by an Aussie Journeyman and a junior Brit tester.

It was a lame excuse though, and going for a sprint at the bottom of a climb sounds pretty dumb also.

I think he wants to be a 3 times Paris-Roubaix winner, 2 times Ronde van Vlaanderen winner, 2 times winner of the grote Schelde prijs, 1 time winner of Gent-Wevelgem, 6 time stage winner at the Tour, 2 time stage winner at the Vuelta, countless of podium finishes at Milan-San Remo, green jersey winner at the Tour and world champion winner yes.

Gosh... poor Sky ppl... we are smashing them too much :D

Eh, there's only like four of us, and we are used to it by now. I think even most Sky fans are disappointed with how the team is riding.

As for Phinney, I seem to think he has shown climbing talent before, perhaps in the Tour d'Avenir? Maybe I am making that up. Anyway, I wouldn't write him off as a future GC contender just yet, he has a huge motor and a fairly slim build so he might well find his climbing legs at some point.

It may well be that he won't, though, in which case I think cobbles and time trials will be his major strengths, with a bit of sprinting thrown in for good measure.

Holly shyt who cares. The who started this is just trolling.

Everyone knows he has no hope to win any grand tours. He's too tall and too heavy. Granted some of that weight is still left from track but still.

At best, as mentioned before in way too many other threads, he will be an excellent cobblestone classics guy with solid sprint and TT skills.

Give it a rest.

My vote for the dumbest post of the month of August...

Yeah, but I think this is the same guy who opined that Horner "barely climbs well", so par for the course.

I expressed myself bad... I wanted to say that He is not THAT good... but of course is my opinion... and you can differ...
