Step one - be less arrogant and trigger happy
Step two - read threads fully before wading in with threats of bans.
Step three - make sure you understand the arguments being made before threatening posters
Step four - understand that banning or threatening people for accusing someone of trolling, while letting trolls troll is a really stupid way to moderate
Step five - understand that accusations of trolling are not always motivated by the fact that someone disagrees with a poster.
Step six - take the concerns of posters more seriously.
Step seven - explain your decisions more clearly and be more transparent and honest.
step eight - accept the validity of criticism. If everyone is criticising you it does not mean you are doing a good job, and stop trying to claim that it does. It means you are doing a very bad job.

In short - calmer, more intelligent and thoughtful moderation would be a small but significant step forward.

I think you'll have better luck getting Lance to say the truth ;)

Closing my "Lance owes the Clinic an apology" was complete bull****. That was the greatest thread in a long time. This place ****ing sucks.

The problem with the thread was the implication of trolling. Trolling is not allowed on the CN Forums. It is against the rules, therefore it is stopped in its tracks immediately whenever it occurs. You have clearly confused "trolling" for what the mods refer to as "allowing for all opinions."

Repeated appearances from the same banned individual(s) whose posting style instantly revealed themselves is not trolling. Trolling is not allowed on CN forums. They were simply presenting the "other side" to the Armstrong argument.

Personally, I find it offensive that a genuine American hero was bullied by a media icon into falsely admitting to things that he never did just to satisfy the insatiable urges of The Dirty Dozen that occupy The Clinic. Without the mods allowing for "all opinion" this place would have never moved on from the intellectually informative discussions of a few years ago. Valiantly defending Armstrong and insulting those who clearly love cancer is something to be admired. The mods should be commending for allowing such scintillating exchanges over the years.

Regardless of what Oprah forced Lance into saying, I think we should remember the words of Chris Horner: Is there video tape evidence of doping? I think not. Therefore there is still room for rational debate. I trust that the mods, guided by the wisdom of Daniel Benson, will continue to encourage the expression of "all opinions."

I think it is all of "us" who owe the mods an apology. They are volunteers after all. Actually, that's not true. They were forced into beings mods (presumably by Oprah as well. She is very rich and powerful). They have real jobs and life's to contend with (and none of us do). They simply can not be expected to recognize trolling. They are very, very busy with other things. It was only upon close examination that one of the mods discovered that Polish was trolling. This came as a shock to most forum members but it is a clear indicator of just how astute the moderation staff is, and how strictly they adhere to the rules of not allowing trolling.

Besides, whatever you may think of Armstrong, all of his transgressions occurred fifteen years ago. Just ask Jens Voigt. Isn't it time to move on?

This from a forum member who has moved on to supposed greener pastures yet comes back for the one pot shot. Maybe you should heed Jens words?

I realize that your "verified" ranking of CyclingNews Forum Number 1 grants you special priveldges as official Gate Keeper. I do apologize, after the fact, for not seeking your advanced permission to post here.

Thank You.

I just want to tell the mod staff that I enjoy reading the reasons for bans in the suspension thread. For some reason I got a chuckle out of this:

mountainrman has been banned for 3 months for a history of trolling, capping it with invoking Hitler and Stalin in reference to other forum members.

Unfortunately, if I was a mod mountainman would probably get points for being creative. Hopefully, my application for mod here is still being seriously considered.

If not, I would like to volunteer to write the reasons for suspensions. I could be creative in that.

Here is my all time favorite, BTW from Susan awhile back. :D

Cobblestoned has been banned for three days for several disgusting postings with references to bodily functions.

gotta laugh

chrisE whenever i turn to cn forum my 1st check is 'member suspensions'
i'm even disappointed if there are none...........and the joy in seeing
the most annoying members banned

then it's the mods threads to smile at members indignation over trivial matters

i woulda thought that you have been around cn forum for long enough to be aware there is little creative thought amongst forum members........i read
the clinic most of all............where the same once clever catch phrases and tired old jokes are repeated on and on........echo.....echo

members who don't follow the forum line are ridiculed by certain members
...........the mods sitting back thinking........it's just the way it is

don't forget...............not all produce the same bodily functions....that's
for the masses

Why isn't thehog allowed to quote himself?

It is not something new, and I'd describe it as his posting style. And IF your going to mod posting styles, then there are plenty that you could do a some tweaking with ;)

Doesn't quoting not get picked up by the ignore filter? So if you keep quoting yourself you (in effect) force people to pick up your comments.

That's my guess why he does it.

double troll ya

hoggie appears to often quote themselves ........and be allowed to

many of hoggies posts could be seen by some members to be trolling

quoting their own 'trolling' post removes any doubt

i would not quote my own post.....would you?....it seems kinda sad

LOL.

Mods get asked about status of the stale Papp-smeargate, Susan says it is not resolved and locks the thread.

Yeah, after she erases all of the "incriminating" questions. Transparency! :p

Was that the thread locked up which was started by Granv??

I wondered what could have happened there because everything was edited out. I just figured Hugh had crossed the line again and was edited by a mod. :D

If they were serious about getting it resolved all they'd have to do is hire a lawyer, pretty simple, FM isn't going to spend money on them for just a thread threat.

While quotes don't get picked up by the ignore filter, surely it's still a post by a poster that is on ignore?

So if you had Hog on ignore and didn't have me on ignore, and I quoted Hog, you'd see Hog's post in my post quoting it. But if you have Hog on ignore, surely his posts won't appear even if they have his previous content quoted in it?

The $64K question, and it does not take a genius to figure it out but it might take someone other than a mod. What is the purpose of the post below and all the others from this guy that are just like it?

Jaochim said:
I'm afraid I don't attach much importance to the shrill rantings of a handful of loons on the Internet.

The desperate genuflexions that have taken place to try and conjure something out of nothing have been hilarious to behold. Claims such as 'Wiggins has come out of nowhere', 'Sky tactics look like USPS', etc. Then you've got the risible attempts from halfwits to try and bend data that they clearly don't understand (notice how that one has died a death).

No. The world isn't listening to you guys. Sorry.

(No offence intended towards you, Franklin)

It was an answer to this post from Franklin (with whom I was having a discussion)

Indeed, a subtle, but important difference from evidence. It's insane to deny suspicions, just look at the Sky thread :D

If you've got a problem with it, report it to the Mods rather than trying to get your little army of trolls on board

i'm no genius but it looks as though joachim was expressing an opinion

but as to the purpose of the forum in the grand scheme of things..........i'm
somewhat puzzled too

The simple answer is because I can't be on every day so the enforcement is very uneven. No more complicated than that. It would be great to have more mods.

Joachim is consistently post after post after post flaming half the clinic.

Every few hours he brings out another post portraying most of the clinic as deluded bitter loser internet trolls who have no understanding of life.

And as bro deal pointed out, few if any of these posts offer any arguments relevant to whatver thread or discussion they are thrown into. insulting others is the only purpose of most of them.

Joachim said:
He's a public figure ffs, not some internet troll with nothing riding on it.

Joachim said:
Quite.

Life probably seems very simple from your armchair with your laptop on your knee. Especially if that is pretty much all you do.

Joachim said:
Very easy for a bunch of internet warriors to come out with the sort of stuff you guys are (anonymously) but this is Wiggins work environment, not a school playground.

Joachim said:
Proof? I think you'll find no proof is needed here. All you need is to be Australian and bitter ;)

Joachim said:
Funnily enough, I'm one of a small handful of people who arent trolls, from both sides of the fence.

You certainly aren't on that list.
Joachim said:
Most here wouldn't, because they are able to sit here, in a priviledged position, smearing and sneering at whoever they want.

Joachim said:
The problem with you guys is you are locked away listening to each other reinforcing each others views to such an extent that when somebody like myself challenges these views, analytically, you genuinely believe it is trolling because you can't countenance any views other than your own. It's like a troop of chimpanzees jumping up and down when a stranger appears because they feel their hierarchy has been threatened.

And those are just the posts from the last 2 days where the trolling was in the first 3 lines so it could be found by looking through his post history.

None of these posts make any argument. They are just flaming for the sake of flaming. I understand there are a lot of emotions in the clinic (and Joachim uses that as an excuse to hide most of his trolling anyway) but there has to be a limit.

Especially since this is a poster who has been banned before for similar behaviour.

edit: and these were just the posts where he insults everyone. i ignored the ones where the trolling was directed at individuals.

Wow.

You've just spent a load of time trawling through my posts when you could have just used the forum 'Ignore' feature.

Funny how accusations of trolling can only be made by one 'side' in Hitch world.

P.S that last post of mine that you quote, how many weeks ago was it from?
