Seeing that a certain recent post is still here, I can only assume that no mod (or Daniel) has even looked in here in the last 24 hours....

Hiero, I would appreciate a reply in view of the effort I took to explain 'our side' of things. A PM will do, I won't insist on any public groveling.;)

Now, I'm not going to include quotes, and all that - since including them, by itself would be inflammatory. A lot of very outrageous claims have been made about the deleted posts in the Boston Marathon bombing thread. There shouldn't be any need to note that I've been posting in the cafe for the better part of two years, should there? Is it really relevant?

I will give you this - that there is a clique of regular posters in the cafe, who feel at ease with each others' jabs. This is noted. And, I will say, out of the deleted posts, 2 were, imo, borderline offense, and could have been left. But, they got the ax because the were so directly a part and parcel with one that was very over the line. There was also nothing, I repeat, nothing, included in those post besides personal insults. They had no redeeming value.

So, by request, here's the stats. Amsterhammer lost 6 words, since they contributed to the exchange. Two other posters lost a total of 3 posts. A total of 6 sentences. 100% personal slams.

I understand how to be reasonable and fair. I believe I have done that. I understand how to take the personalities of the posters into consideration. I already did that. If you want the cafe to be left alone, then have a little more regard for the rules. I know people who don't post in the cafe because it often degenerates into rather hard-edged bantering amongst the clique of frequent posters.

You guys are all good enough with words that you can have a discussion without direct personal slams. We have 30+ thousand members of the forum, and hundreds of unregistered guests on any given day. They are your audience - not just the few frequent posters with thick skins that you already know.

See, that wasn't so hard, even without deletions.

Although things go OT all the time in the Cafe, you're right in flagging this exchange as being way OT.;)

(On the other hand, a public apology from TFF is such a rare thing, that it really should be commemorated in some way, perhaps by a CN front page news story.)

:p

I moved this here from the "hippy lettuce" thread (aka Darryl Webster thread).

What you see here, Amster, are two posters who know, by experience, that personal attacks will get the ax. You also see the same forebearance that I've shown throughout. Not something new here. Andy and chewie were showing restraint, and also showing us how well they can use words, to insult, without going immediately "on the ropes".

I will keep your comments in mind, whilst in the cafe, but direct personal attacks with no redeeming value are "over the line".

Great stats that only prove the opposite of your actions. More people stop to look at a train wreck that a bed of roses. Someday this fact will make sense to you, and the fact that this site is a commercial success because of it. From your post history I know its hard to get a grasp of itm so maybe you should consult someone who can explain it better than the Cafe regulars have.

Those stats only reinforce what is going on should continue. Open your mind and use the cold hard facts to lead you to the answer. Don't forget to factor in the AdSense page click benefits, small maybe to you but if a non-factor then why isn't it removed? Yes, questions you must ask yourself and come up with your own answers, assuming you can do that.

The number of words was hardly the point, as you surely must realize. It was the principle of your action, and your complete misinterpretation of my 'six words' as an "attack" that stuck in my craw. As I indicated, all I expected or hoped for from you was an explanation of whose posts you had deleted (presumably Rhub and Scott,) and some small indication that you accept that your action might have been hasty or unnecessary, just one little mea culpa. No, instead all we get is further justification, and not the slightest sign of contrition.

Moreover, in view of the fact that you are now regularly reading in the Cafe, I find these actions of yours to be in rather stark, and somewhat hypocritical, contrast with your complete inaction with regard to the one poster who is a regular, and often offensive, Cafe troll.

When are you and other mods finally going to deal with people who initiate abuse, confrontation, and trolling, instead of equally 'penalizing' posters who feel compelled to react to the original 'offense'?

Come on, velocity isn't really insulting, just misguided and passionate. ;)

This is a reasonable response, imo. Ok - why no contrition? Because, I won't lie, I don't feel any. I'm not sure I would change anything, should I see a similar situation, in the future. I might be a little more aware that you, Scotty, and Rhu, at least, are at least semi-comfortable with each other. That does not change the fact that other people than you are involved.

Do I understand your point, that you guys were just having a talk, and it was all cool? Yes, but some things you can say to each other at the coffee machine, when it is just you, are not appropriate here - where there are always more people who can "hear" you.

But those 2 posters know who they are, and they have not, as you have, openly talked about it. It would not be proper for me to then name them.

If you want me to say "I'm sorry", I will: I apologize. I feel badly that my actions upset you. But that does not change what I see - that your words had a stronger impact than you might realize, and that not everyone reading was entirely "cool" with the overall exchange.

Tell ya what, though, next time I will do this - next time I'll send you a warning when part of your post is contributing to others going over the line, but is only involved by being contributory.

As to your troll - I have NO idea who you are referring to. If you have been posting complaints through the official complaint method (bold because it is coming to my attention that a lot of people are not doing this, and then complaining), then, if we can see what you see, and we agree that they are an unjustified/purely inflammatory troll, then we can and will take action.

Not sure this is the right thread.

I noticed some mods/admins/whatever warned some users via the Visitor Message which can be seen by everybody. Isn't it more appropriate to do this in a personal message? ;)

i agree...a mod left me visitor message which while not a warning was concerning a sensitive matter

i would have preferred NOT having message left in such a way

fortunately such messages may easily be deleted.........but how often
do members check their personal info?

I agree that it is a problem. The downside of a pm though is that other mods can't see it. But the downside of visitor message is (far) greater.

I'll try to find a solution. Would you mind pm me when you see such a visitor message?

I also agree that this could be a problem. I know I have sent PM's to quite a few posters. If I EVER use the visitor message function for this, it was a MISTAKE, and you should let me know.

IMO the biggest perks of being a mod is the ability to read all the deleted material, and getting to know the other mods much better.

You (all of you together) really post a lot of hilarious crap. I also enjoy to read some of the b!tch fights  :D
