The casual racial slurs, misogyny (how can adults tolerate the bile spewed at Michelle Cound?), and neanderthal references to sexuality in The Clinic are completely out of order.

Why has self-policing failed so dismally?

There certainly appears to be a somewhat less strict moderation of long time posters, especially of the more 'sceptical' kind. Some sort of founders effect, I assume. It is only a forum at the end of the day, and it's reputation is, apparently, well known, so while it may be off-putting to those outside that group, I'm not convinced any real harm can be caused.

I doubt any reasonable person, for example, will take their cues on sensitive issues of sexuality from a short bout of unfortunate sneering buried in a forum topic.

Michelle is clean. Never tested positive.

Got it in one.
Hardly surprising given several of the more recent mods come from the same faction.
Leave any expectancy of equanimity at the door.

I have no problem with bias. Everybody is biased. It's tolerating the frat-boy bigotry that needs to stop.

That's cheap, even by your standards.
We aren't all blessed with your powers to change posting history.

As for the BS, we both know it isn't since I too read that twitter exchange about getting a certain poster banned.
Plus, the proof is in the forum posting. (and banning history)

But hey, if everybody is happy, I'm happy.
It was time to bail out again, since there's no real opportunity to debate nowadays.

Enjoy your Tour.

Mellow your one of the best posters here. I much prefer you stay. I'm not sure why you feel things are so unjust here. It's not like your getting banned a lot.

My preference would be you keep posting and not get drawn into any great conspiracy that the mods are biased.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, hog.
Good to see that you had to ask who Martin's sockpuppet account was.
Read my post above the one you quoted and you will see it is now accredited to MartinV.
My reply was originally posted to Packfodder, Martin's SP.

Bison felt it was perfectly fine to alter this post to make his point.
(but, in doing so, made my point)
Which would be a ban offence for us, I believe?

I've never fancied p*ssing into the wind. Better things to do with my time.

Besides, I'm sure there will be plenty to talk about in the coming three weeks and some new *pack fodder* for the Clinic to chew up!

This is just a test. Please don't ban me.

f*ck

So, if you apply the censoring yourself it accepts it as such.

Correct. And, if you apply formatting inside the word, you can actually spell it out. The censor looks at spelling - and when you write something with html formatting - it isn't spelled correctly, but is rendered correctly by the browser.

Eg. I'll use a harmless word for the example - and it will include an error so it does not render.

If turkey was a filtered word, you would get ******, right?
turkey = ******
t(COLOR="Blue")urk(/COLOR)ey
what it would look like if you used square brackets instead of parenths:
turkey

By quoting this, you can see the coding.

I suppose one could program a filter that would detect all the html tags, and then run a search, but that would require spending money on programming, and I guess nobody has thot that worth the expense yet.

For starters I think a censor that doesn't filter a word like '****stan', as in the country between Afghanistan and India, would be a good idea.
It just makes an innocent word look more dirty.

Much better would be to update the word filter so people actually respect it. Can I link to http://www.****iociclismo.it/ ? Can I write ****stan? Oh but surely it'll censor ***...

The thing that's frustrating is, this type of selective censorship, where it recognizes particular contexts where a word is not offensive, but does not apply it consistently.

For example, I can discuss the language of Yiddish, however if I were to use the word for 'Jew' in that language, ***, it is often used by gentiles as a racial slur and is censored.

But if this is okay, then why is it not ok to discuss the country of which Islamabad is the capital city, because the first part of its name has similarly become a racial epithet?

Why does the censor recognise that Y I D is not offensive when followed by -dish, but not that P A K I is not offensive when followed by -stan?

Yeah seems weird. There's two level of censoring: only when the word is alone (*** and *** vs. xyid and xass) and always censored (f*ck and $lut vs. x**** and x****). Doesn't really make sense why P-A-K-I is in the second category.

Question for mods

is it acceptable to use a swear word with one asterix in it

like when used in this post http://forum.cyclingnews.com/showpost.php?p=1509157&postcount=584

Del, if you were insulted by my use of the word, then I apologize.

I can only speak for myself and no other mod. But to be perfectly honest, I don't really mind people using swear words too much. IMO Swear words are only "bad" words if you make them out to be bad words. Or use them as bad words. You'll never see me delete, or give a warning for, or ban anyone for using a swear word in a post. Unless it is used in an insulting or derogatory way.

And that does not mean I am saying anyone can go and put constant swear words in every single one of their posts. I would consider that trolling.
