A bit of a list of some of the best cycling crashes (along with some ones for laughs as well).

I think one of the most exciting pro crashes is McEwen's 2007 stage 1 win where he crashes and comes back to take the sprint out of nowhere.

In the same vein as the McEwen crash: Axel Merckx in the 2000 Giro

Watched it live on tv, and it was unbelievable, especially with daddy Merckx being there as well, barely abe to hold himself together as he was clearly very emotionally moved by what his son accomplished. Maybe not the most dramatic crash in terms of damage done, but the whole of the stage win was pretty heroic. :)

John Lee Augustyns dramatic over-the-mountainside crash last year at the vuelta:

But my "top" crash is still our own Mr. Bruyneel in the '96 Tour, where he also took a extremely lucky dive on the descent from Roselend:

Just remember seing this live and thinking "how the heck did he survive that?"

EDIT: Honourable mentioning goes to:

- Guerini on Alpe D'Huez 1999 and still winning.
- Ullrich in Le Tour 2001 riding into a ditch.
- Schleck in Tour De Suisse 2008 landing in a tree.

Oooh I remember the Bruyneel fall, was very nasty looking over the edge. For absolute carnage you can't go past some of the sprint finish pile up's already mentioned.

This is the crash where Bruyneel got the "Hog" tag. The riders in the peleton knew the he was really amping up the phets and were laughing at him because he could barely remember crashing... he was so wired he just kept riding off the side of a mountain. Some say he was still pedalling as he was mid air ! Hence the name came about as “the hog” for his consumption of amphetamines. Ie he would snort anything up like a hog.

Note the look in his eyes as he comes out of the ravine...... wired as a chicken fence !
