Recently I've become quite interested in the work of Roman Sidorov, a mysterious and reclusive Russian musician who committed suicide in 2003. Not a great deal of information is available about him, but he was relatively prolific and recorded under a series of aliases and projects, often with his wife Alya. While not for the faint-hearted, his best-known project, Staruha Mha, is dark ambient music with some sinister electronics that remind me of the likes of Cicciolina Holocaust and the more ambient Einstürzende Neubauten works.

More accessible are the bleak, but beautiful atmospheric guitar layers of Der Golem (where Sidorov provided the guitar and vocals, and the electronics were handled by DM Zubov, who is also no longer with us).

Best of all, however, are the ethereal, meandering guitar lines and submerged, distant vocals of Sedativ, along with mid-tempo drum machines and atmospheric loops creating something reminiscent of shoegaze or slowcore (like so, Roman's final project - the only copy of the album was found in the wake of his suicide.

Interesting tracks, the first one made me feel suicidle also.

Just saw The Wedding Present and impressed with their support act Toquiwa, this vid doesn't do them justice but they're a banging Japanese girl punk group.

I've been listening to a lot of Propagandhi recently. Their style is pretty extreme for mainstream standards (hardcore, thrash, punk) so they're not for everybody, but they're one of the few bands I listen to that I think everyone who truly appreciates music could enjoy at least at some level.

Yeah, that's a cool band. I still think this is one of the best punkrock songs ever made:

Actually I didn't know they were still making music. I'll check their latest album.
Oh, you're in for a huge surprise. They sound nothing like they did in How to Clean Everything now - you could say that era ended when former bassist John K. Samson left to form The Weakerthans (who, by the way, are my favourite band). It took me some time to adapt, but I think there's no comparison: Propagandhi are a much better band now than back then.

I'll check it out, thanks for the tip.
Weakerthans are amazing. Bit sad they haven't produced anything in almost 6 years now.

I'm not a fan of that more generic, NOFX-like punkrock they made back then.

Don't know, I don't consider Nofx generic at all. Sure after So long and thanks for all the shoes they lost a step, but in the 90s they were still the ones setting the trend in punk rock.

It's true Propagandhi developed a more personal sound in Today's Empire, which I happen to like a lot. Still I prefer How to clean everything cause it's raw, though derivative in the sound.

Some hardcore:

Even from that era, I'd say Less Talk, More Rock is better than How to Clean Everything. It certainly has more personality and it sounds less NOFX-like. It's still my second favourite Propagandhi record, after Supporting Caste (I don't know where to put Failed States yet).

I never liked NOFX much, although I do enjoy Punk in Drublic, The War on Errorism and, above all, S&M Airlines. Like many punk bands from the 80s/90s, I'd say they've spent the better part of the last decade turning into a joke.

New Scott Walker album is finally there. Two songs in I'm already frightened to hell. :D

2006's "The Drift" had with "Clara", "The Escape" or "Cue" some of the most incredible moments in modern musical history. This is until today the only time I got really scared by a piece of music.
