Funny, I was just recently introduced to/recommended to listen to Aphex Twin and though I haven't heard a lot yet, I'm really glad that I've 'found' this gem. So I was just about to post about in this thread, when I on the first unread page see your post! I really like Ptolemy so far, but the whole album just flows so well when you are studying or whatever.

Aphex Twin - Ptolemy

The late 90s saw some spectacularly good electronic music acts emerging, especially (but not exclusively) under the Warp label.
Aphex Twin, Brothom States, Plaid (previously The Black Dog), Prefuse73, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Jimmy Edgar (a bit later), and a lot more really.
Some really experimental stuff, some flirting with mainstream, some in between.

As is typical with electronic acts (or perhaps with any kind of band or performer), you're gonna love some, hate some. Plaid, for instance, I loved their earlier albums, but got really bored by some of their more recent stuff.
Some Jimmy Edgar songs blew my mind, others are really really lame.
With some of these acts you really have to filter through a lot of crap, but if you do, you can come across some really exquisite songs. Some of the Aphex Twin/Squarepusher/Autechre stuff is too much (too crowded/busy/chaotic) for me, but it's been rewarding to go through their ouevres in search of diamonds.
Boards of Canada otoh are more predictable.

Ptolemy is from Selected Ambient Works 85-92, sniper

Perfect album for me to play in the background, as it doesn't disturb, but rather stimulates me.

For sure I will check out some more of his work and those you mentioned, during summer.

We went to see James Taylor live last night. My 65 yr. old redneck hippy buddy was like a kid in a candy store, he managed an autograph to boot. I felt like I was back in my childhood listening to the car radio; background music. I always find these boomer extravaganzas somewhat strange. James hasn't lost whatever he had though, and an 11 piece band was cool. He has a sense of humour like Bob Newhart, dry and naive.
