Plenty of games this week that matter regarding the playoffs : Vikings and Bucs is a must win for both teams, Niners and Washington is at least a must win for the Niners, Billa and Steelers, Ravens and Browns, Colts and Raiders, Cardinals and Giants and Chiefs and Dolphins. Hawks should beat the Jets and Saints should beat the Eagles. Think the Bills and Browns can win, Dolphins game could be interesting as will the Giants and Cardinals. If the Vikings can beat the Bucs they should make the playoffs based on their schedule. If Washington beat the Niners they also have a good shot at the playoffs especially if the Giants lose to the Cardinals. The Eagles have the toughest draw in the NFC East so a loss to the Saints should just about finish them off.

I don't think that I've complained about the officiating very much this year, but I still don't think that its acceptable overall. I still think that a big part of it is old men who can't keep up wit the pace of the game so they are out of position too often. Overall I would like to see more consistency across the board. Granted, differences between crews will happen (but should be minimal), but differences within crews in the same game just isn't acceptable. Two areas that probably bother me the most are PI, and hits to the head.

PI- sometimes a brush brings out a flag, sometimes hand fighting, sometimes an arm pull, sometimes a hold or a shove...how the H do they ever play D?! Old man out of position, not seeing what is actually happening.

Hit to the head (especially the QB)- every week I see a slight brush with a shoulder to the ducking head of a QB called, OK, but also that same week, often same game, a QB gets slammed in the face and no call. WTH? The missed calls can only be attributed to the official who is supposed to be focused on the QB getting caught up in the game instead of doin their job.

Offensive line holding is one of my oldest rants. It can be called on every play the story goes, but it seems to only be called on plays with big gains...why is that?

It also comes down to personal opinion on the refs when they see the play. Also if you're a big, respected player or coach arguing every ref call and non call it starts getting into the refs head that maybe something is or isn't there. Another bias is how they like the individual player. Rgis was brought up a couple years ago but would you be more willing to throw a flag on things for Brady who is almost always polite and nice to you, greets you each game day and shakes your hand and has a conversation about your life or Newton who doesn't do this, calls you and other refs out, and talks trash about you and other refs.

Hit to the head of the quarterback can be best summarized by the Patriots vs Chiefs AFCCG. The back judge behind the quarterback is the one who calls this penalty. Brady got whacked in the shoulder and either reflex or intuation he flenched and moved his head. From behind it looked Brady just got hammer swing hand to his helmet. Mahomes actually gets hit in the head from the same kind of play but his head doesn't move thus the judge thinks it's a shoulder hit.

With holding could be called every play the same could be said about pass interference on contested long balls but it varies on if it's called. I think the craziest is the Bucs getting one on Gronk during a hail mary while the Eagles in Super Bowl 52 absolutely mauled Hogan 20 yards from the endzone and no penalty.

I think there should definitely be a judge in the stadium that can watch the replays like us. They can have the same time as coaches do to throw a challenge as they do to throw a flag on the previous play. If the ball is hiked than the flag can no longer be thrown. I think that would be fair and can help fix missed penalties or penalties that shouldn't have been called.

Bills outplaying the Steelers. Not too surprised by the Niners losing to the no names. Once again turnovers are killing them. Cowboys now have more to play for when they meet next week. Surprised by the Saints loss and the Raiders beat down. Seattle should be happy to rack up some points even against the Jets. Good wins for the Bucs and Bears. GB rolling along and Rodgers is on course to win the MVP. Thought the Giants would have done better against the Cardinals. Dolphins and Chiefs was about what I expected.

SEA...a win is a win and like moving target said, scoring points like that might be a good mental thing. That being said, the O line still sucks and Russ is playing scared. The D dropped three 'easy' interceptions (two could have gone for TDs). Against the NYJ it didn't matter, but those plays matter in most games.
I saw yesterday that he's been sacked 40 times before today's game. That's crazy and not counting times he's been pressured.

Crappy defeat for the Dolphins who had a bunch of injuries as well. They have to win out to gin a wildcard as it looks like they won't be able to catch Buffalo.

Two wins should do it and two of those games look winnable. Injuries of course come into it.

Baker looked disappointed at the end. I only saw bits of it but a lot of points scored.
I saw parts and most of the 4th quarter. Ravens got away with 15(!) men on the field with 3 running off. A tacky roughing the passer to Mayfield. Ravens defense getting away with stuff after that. Browns recovered from their deficit and looked good in the 4th. I don't know how their defense let a 1 minute drive with no timeouts or they didn't use their timeouts on Tucker (not that it could have mattered but you never know).

Well I thought it was surely going to extra time. Hard way to lose after fighting back. Ravens might have saved their season with the last two wins. Looked like they were going down the tubes and were not playing well. I thought they were not going to make the playoffs and it's still not a sure thing.

I thought OT or Browns could hold them to 3 and out and attempt to score.

Great game for Jalen Hurts in his first career start ending with the upset over the Saints. What a difference he's made with his mobility and turning potential sacks into 1st down running plays. Also, some nice throws and showed some leadership qualities. So impressive, he's been named the starter for this week's game against the Cardinals while things continue to go south for Wentz:

"Rumor: Mystery team will consider a trade for Eagle's Carson Wentz in the offseason:"

Hurts getting some recognition:

Seattle is so perplexing right now. To start the season, their defense was worst in the HISTORY of the NFL, and the offense carried the team. So much so by the offense, that Russ was in MVP discussions. Now however, the defense is playing much better, but Russ and the offense are struggling. I just don't get it. Coincidentally maybe, Russell's struggles all started after he branded "Let Russ Cook", which did not strike a good impression with me. A little too much ego and lacking humility for me. So now he's getting a lot of humble pie, the whole pie, not just a slice.

Think Wentz is going to be hard to move not only with that contract but also with his current form. Many people seem to think though that it's only temporary. Other QBs also seem to be sympathetic. Be hard to see Rivers replaced by Wentz on current form but Rivers isn't what he was. Oddly Foles has had just as many issues as Wentz since leaving the Eagles and winning a SB. You'd sign either of them with a certain amount of doubt or hope...........Mayfield and Allen have had very good seasons after early doubts about them. The Saints obviously need Brees back. Be interested to see what happens with Darnold, Jimmy G and Dak next season and maybe Stafford and Ryan also depending on their teams strategy for the future.

In the recent Browns-Ravens game, Baker Mayfield threw a Hail Mary pass about 65 yards in the air (from his own 40 yard line to about half way into the far EZ), which is being touted as the longest pass (albeit incomplete) recorded in NFL history.

I thought QBs could throw the ball a lot further than that, but apparently not too much further. Here’s a link on something called a QB challenge, in which NFL QBs tried to throw the ball as far as they could. They only got two tries, and the ball had to land within a certain narrow alley, which might have constrained them a little. The best tosses were usually a little more than 70 yards. Vinnie Testaverde was listed as having thrown a football 80 yards.

I remember watching John Elway when he was at Stanford, and though maybe my memory is bad, I think at the end of a half once, when there was nothing to lose, he faded back to his own thirty, and threw it into the far EZ.

So I went to the physics. It turns out that the formula for calculating the distance any projectile travels based on its angle and speed as it begins its path is really simple. It’s just:

sin(2θ) x v²/g

where θ is the angle, v is the speed, and g is the acceleration of gravity. The optimum angle is just 45 degrees, where sin (2θ) =1, so the formula reduces to v²/g.

The highest throwing speeds attained by QBs at the annual NFL combine are about 60 mph, or 88 feet per second. Gravitational acceleration is 32 feet per second per second. So the maximum distance travelled would be 88²/32 = 242 feet, or just over 80 yards. This does not take into account air resistance, but that is supposed to be relatively small.

Raiders and Chargers both tried hard to lose the game late ! Chargers need a kicker. Think I remember saying the same thing last year. Their current kicker has missed nine this season.........that should finish off the Raiders playoff chances.
Chargers always need special teams players. There was that one year they were top 10 in offense and defense and 1st in yards gained and allowed. Special teams was 32 and they missed the playoffs.

I don't think the Mayfield one is correct. Just one example I know off the top of my head is Brady in 07 Super Bowl and the second to last play throwing from their own 13 to the opponent 20, so 67 yards and the defender got a hand on it otherwise Moss would have caught it at the 19 or 18 and he threw it from the right side of the numbers to the left so had more air yards. I'm sure Mahomes, Rodgers, Allen, and Stafford can throw a little further.
