SEATTLE -- Former Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle Chad Wheeler was formally charged Wednesday following his arrest on suspicion of felony assault-domestic violence.

The King County prosecutor's office filed criminal charges of first-degree domestic violence assault, domestic violence unlawful imprisonment and resisting arrest against Wheeler, a spokesperson with the office told ESPN. He is accused of twice choking his girlfriend until she lost consciousness.

Prosecutors requested that Wheeler be placed on electronic home detention and for his ankle monitoring device to be equipped with GPS monitoring.

Wheeler is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 9, when he is expected to enter a plea.

Earlier Wednesday, the Seahawks said that Wheeler, 27, is no longer with the team.

In a series of tweets Wednesday, Wheeler wrote that, "Events happened over the weekend that transpired from a manic episode. I am deeply sorry for the pain and suffering that I have caused to [the woman] and her family. I apologize profusely for the turmoil that I have caused to my family, teammates, fans and those closest to me. The most important thing right now is that [the woman] gets the care she needs and I get help. Both are happening.

"It is time for me to walk away from football and get the help I need to never again pose a threat to another. I cannot express my sorrow or remorse enough. I am truly ashamed."

The Seahawks released a statement Wednesday that read, in part: "The Seahawks are saddened by the details emerging against Chad Wheeler and strongly condemn this act of domestic violence. Our thoughts and support are with the victim. Chad is a free agent and no longer with the team."

Wheeler was waived by the team on Wednesday, per the NFL's official transactions wire.

Wheeler was arrested late Friday evening after the alleged assault at an apartment in the Seattle suburb of Kent, where he and the woman had been living together since November.

According to an incident report and charging documents obtained by ESPN, the woman called 911 from inside a locked bathroom and said she was being "killed." She told Kent police she had fled into the bathroom after Wheeler threw her onto a bed and choked her long enough for her to lose consciousness. At one point, she said, he removed one hand, stuck it down her throat and pressed it against her nose and mouth to try to stop her from breathing, while continuing to choke her with his other hand.

The woman briefly regained consciousness before Wheeler pinned her down and choked her back into unconsciousness, according to the charging documents. The woman recalled attempting to roll away from Wheeler, only for Wheeler to "violently grab her left arm and rip her body back toward him."

The charging documents state that when the woman regained consciousness for the second time, Wheeler calmly returned to the bedroom and expressed surprise, saying to her, "Oh, you're still alive." She ran to the bathroom, locked it and sent text messages to friends and family -- as well as Wheeler's father -- asking them to call 911. She said she heard Wheeler tell someone on the phone -- she believed it was his father -- that he was "just chillin'." When the woman tried to flee out of a second door to the bathroom, Wheeler entered and began apologizing profusely, she said.

Police could hear a woman screaming from inside the apartment, the report states. They forced entry into the unit and then into the locked bathroom, where Wheeler was standing behind the woman. The report states that she was crying in pain, with her face covered in blood and her left arm swollen and limp against her body. She also had noticeable fingerprints on both sides of her neck, according to the report.

The woman was asked by one officer if she thought she was going to die and responded: "I thought I already had."

The charging documents state that the 6-foot-7, 310-pound Wheeler did not comply with officers' commands and that at least one Taser application was made directly to his body "with little effect." As three officers attempted to detain him, Wheeler repeatedly yelled, "Sorry!" and said, "I don't beat women!" He called out to the woman that he loved her. Wheeler refused to speak with officers, according to the report.

The woman was taken to a hospital because of pain in her left arm. Scans revealed a fractured humerus and dislocated elbow in the arm, according to the charging documents, which noted that the whites of her eyes having turned almost completely red was consistent with signs of strangulation. The documents state that a scan of the woman's chest showed indications that she had aspirated fluid and that she vomited large amounts of blood the next day. She also reported a sore throat, difficulty swallowing and eating, headache and neck pain, "which suggests possible internal injuries to the structures within the neck."

The woman told police that Wheeler, whom she has been dating for about six months, has bipolar disorder and that he had not been taking his medication recently. She said Wheeler had a "manic episode" that was not provoked by any sort of argument but rather began when he suddenly "snapped into a dark place" and told her to stand up and bow to him. He grabbed her by the neck and threw her onto the bed when she refused, the woman said.

"We encourage Chad to get the help he needs," the Seahawks said in their statement, which also asked anyone experiencing domestic violence or mental illness to seek help.

Wheeler was booked into King County jail early Saturday morning and released Tuesday morning after posting a $400,000 bail bond. The King County Prosecutor's office asked for Wheeler to be held on $500,000 bail. The judge set bail at $400,000 and ordered Wheeler to have no contact with the woman and to surrender any weapons. He appeared in court Monday to determine whether there was probable cause to continue holding him in jail.

First-degree domestic violence assault is a Class A felony in Washington, while domestic violence unlawful imprisonment is a Class C felony. If convicted, Wheeler could be sentenced to eight to 12 years in prison, according to prosecutors.

An NFL spokesperson told ESPN that the matter is under review of the league's personal conduct policy. ESPN has reached out to Wheeler's agent for comment.

Wheeler went undrafted out of USC in 2017 and spent parts of his first three seasons with the New York Giants, starting 19 games with the team. He joined the Seahawks in October 2019 and appeared in five games this past season. He was scheduled to become a restricted free agent before Seattle waived him Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Times reported that while at USC in December 2015, Wheeler was detained and then taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after police responded to a call that he was punching walls and windows while barricaded inside an apartment with a 20-year-old female friend and her 7-month-old son. Police subdued Wheeler by firing multiple bean-bag rounds, according to the report.
Egads! If any of those offenses are true, Wheeler is deranged. Certifiably.

Couple years ago (or just about when RPO was being introduced into the NFL after years of success at the college level) I thought RPO would not work in the NFL primarily because NFL players are more athletic than college players. About a year later I realized RPO can work in the NFL because while NFL players are more athletic across the board (as opposed to college level), the key is creating mismatches by pitting more athletic WRs against less athletic defenders, especially linebackers. I mean there's not a LB in the league who can cover a guy like Tyreek Hill in the slot. For the QB, RPO is great because he doesn't have to go through 3 or more progressions, he only has to make one read of a defender at risk (the mismatch), and based on that defenders reaction, the QB makes his decision of what to do with the ball - hand off to the RB or pass it.

So, here is the best explanation of what RPO involves. Greg Cosell on The HERD explains this one RPO play by the Chiefs vs the Bills in the AFCC.
Forward ahead to 8:53 on the timeline where Cosell starts taking about one RPO play by the Chiefs.

I'm a fan who often likes to watch interior line play instead of watching the ball or where the ball goes. And I prefer to watch power run blocking. So, I personally hate the line play aspect of RPO because the run block element of RPO is just finesse or zone blocking, which to me is not as fun to watch compared to power run blocking or mauling. Plus the run block element of RPO is made somewhat less intriguing by that pass block rule of illegal lineman downfield (typically more than 3 yards), so OL blocking downfield at some point has to become less aggressive.

done and dusted............all of the recent talk indicated that Goff was on the way out but they had to pay for it............another rumor now about Wentz heading to the Colts or 49ers .............Colts swould make more sense maybe ..........Texans mght be digging in their toes about Watson
What do you reckon Goff is worth in that deal ?

Must be something like Minus 1 first round pick ?

Nowhere near that much.............the QB market is always insane but this still surprised me. With so many teams currently needing a QB, Detroit was always going to win that deal. The Rams obviously need to win now while they have a great defense and good offense but making the big splash signings usually means they sacrifice depth and they never seem to have first round picks anymore but they got an upgrade at QB. The NFC West just got even harder ! God knows what Watson will go for if the Texans end up trading him. Some people are saying four first round picks which is ridiculous.

I don't like the deal much for the Lions. Don't know why they didn't wait for an auction to develop . Also I'd rather have no part of the Goff mess. The extra draft capital is nice but it's years down the road, it's probably late 1st rounders and they'd really be better off with draft picks now so that they can get on with rebuilding now

Goff did fine in 2018 when he went to the SB, not sure what has happened to him. Many people think Wentz will also come good but neither inspire confidence at the moment. Sounds like both teams preferred to get the deal done now instead of waiting for maybe an even better deal. Yes Detroit will be rebuilding anyway and unless Goff picks up he will eventually be replaced again. I think some QBs will be dealt during the draft maybe. Some teams could trade up for a better QB. Teams like the Bears may although the draft debacle with Trubisky might scare them off. Somehow I doubt the 49ers will trade up. There are a few intriguing QBs that won't go early in the draft according to the experts. Talk of Trevor Lawrence being dealt to get Watson sounds a bit far fetched especially with so much talk about Lawrence's potential.

While this trade seems to make sense for both players, I question that it makes much sense for the teams. As odd as that may sound. Stafford gets to go to a team where he has a chance to win, now...maybe. While Goff gets to go to a team where he can iron out some kinks, and hope the team builds enough around him to help him.

But for the Rams to give up all those draft picks to get Stafford? I mean, is Stafford that good ? They unload Goff's contract, but inherit Staffords. Is that better? And what if they don't win in the next year or two? Then what does their future look like? What a gamble to take.

As to Goff, he's definitely been inconsistent, but he's showed grit all the same, and he's only 26. I never thought he had that bad of an attitude despite some knocks that a new setting may remedy. The concern for me at least was that he was pretty good at the short game, and while he has a strong arm, he lacked deep field accuracy, which can be a real issue to overcome. He had that incredible bomb to Watkins a few years ago that was 60+ in the air, but he rarely threw like that, the Rams frequently had him throwing screens, quick outs, slants. Can Dan Campbell, who mostly coaches receivers, work with that, help Goff.

Shocked Eric Biemeny didn't get a HC job. Then again, I'm not.

The Rams last first round pick was Goff and now they won't get another until the 2024 draft after already trading away future picks to get Ramsey etc .............

A gamble for sure, but like I said, on paper the Rams are better with MS than JG IMO. If they don't win in the next year or two it was a bad gamble, but if they win a Superbowl...

I feel like both of you guys could be off..I feel that Brady made a deal with the devil, But Stafford and Goff ,while both super talented, don't strike me to have that special sauce..I also don't want the Rams to be better than the Chargers..ever. I hope that the Chargers 2nd year QB can constantly improve, played good last year.

I think that Herbert is good, and will get even better.

Stafford is one of those QB's who has the stats. but not the wins because of the team around him IMO. I guess we'll find out.

They better be giving up TWO 1st rd & a 3rd rd pick! They must think he's the 2nd coming of Brady who will lead them to the SB this year. Lol. MS in 9 full seasons at Detroit only went to playoffs in 3 of those seasons - one & done never advancing beyond the 1st round. Not impressive for a #1 0A pick. He also seems like too much of an injury risk to give up those kind of draft picks.

And Goff now becomes a bust - #1 OA pick and traded after just 4 seasons! Lol. The Rams this year had the #1 defense and couldn't get past the 2nd rd of the playoffs. Maybe McVay should have also been ousted.

The NFL QB situation is becoming more & more of a clown show. :D

Just to toss it out there again...
IMO the MVP should come from the Championship team. Did AR play at an MVP level this year? Yes. Did he lead his team to the Championship? No. I guess therein lies the problem with individual awards in a team sport. AR had an MVP year, but his team didn't make it to the big game. I'm sure that we can all name some players who have had MVP years on teams that didn't make it., or even teams that were bad.

Exactly. I just think the odds against that happening are pretty high. But I think the Rams are rolling the dice that they would never win the SB with Goff and his contract (and those draft picks).
I hope that the Chargers 2nd year QB can constantly improve, played good last year.
With a little better OL help, and maybe another key receiver, he definitely could be. He seemed to have all the makings of a player. However, the Chargers hired Brandon Staley as their HC, who was DC for the Rams. I would have thought Eric Biemeny would have been a much better coach if they were planning on building around Justin Herbert, but I think the Chargers were wow'd by the McVey factor (young, feisty coach = winner! Except when it doesn't. The last "young" HC to win a SB was John Harbaugh. Mike Tomlin, who inherited a stacked team, before that. Mostly it's older, sage coaches that win. Belicheck, Reid, Carroll, Coughlin, etc.)

And they lost their DC, Staley, to the Chargers.

I keep looking at the numbers, and I'm starting to wonder if this is the kind of trade when Cleveland "absorbed" Brock Osweiller from the Broncos. Remember that? Brock never played a down in Cleveland, but they had cap space, and needed draft picks Denver was willing to give them to unload Osweiller and his bloated contract. I think there's a real chance that Detroit, flush with some cash this year, will actually draft a QB, with the expectation that Goff will start, until this draft pick is ready to start. Then, they can unload Goff, take a quick $ hit, and move forward with this new rebuild.

If you look past Lawrence, there are several QB's in this draft that probably should go in the 2nd or 3rd round, as they could turn out to be good starting NFL QB's in the right system, but will go earlier because teams are desperate, and view QB's with blind faith. Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Mac Jones... all could go in the 1st round, and any one of them could be the next Dak Prescott or Matt Ryan, etc. Or they could be the next Mitch Trubisky, Paxton Lynch, etc. Taking one of these guys in the 1st, or if available in the 2nd, round, may be what Detroit is thinking.

Slight correction there Alpe: Remember after the Broncos won the SB in the 2015 season, Osweiler rejected the Broncos' generous offer and instead signed with Houston for that insane 4 yr/72 mil deal with 37 mil guaranteed! Then after the 2016 season, Houston unloaded him to Cleveland. And you're right - he never played a single down in Cleveland and actually ended up back in Denver (2017) for a second stint where he and Paxyon Lynch fought for playing time. Lol.

I agree with your assessment on the 2021 class of QBs. And it sounds like they're already overrated with some mock drafts showing the Jets taking either Fields or Wilson with the #2 OA pick! But I think all eyes will be on Jacksonville this year with Urban Meyer (reportingly one of the highest paid coaches now) and of course Trevor Lawrence. So, will Lawrence under the tutelage of Meyer be the next Peyton Manning and can Meyer turn it around and get the Jaguars as SB contenders? (It wasn't too long ago that I thought Minshew was supposed to be guy to resurrect the Jaguars? Lol).
