Not a surprise there at all. Jones has redeem his career with that fine performance going 5-3 in that 8 game stretch when Purdy was injured. His stats were impressive with a 69% comp pct, 7.4 Y/A & a 97.4 passer rating - all career highs. In fact, his passer rating was 13th best, and look at all the top QBs he finished ahead of:

He kept the 9ers in playoff contention when things looked bad when Purdy went down. And being a former 1st rounder (15th OA), why would he want to settle for anything else other than a starting spot?

That is without question most likely. They just need someone with cash, a few motivated politicians, and gullible taxpayers. San Diego and St. Louis seem most likely.
Wouldn't the taxpayers have to approve funding to help build multi-billion dollar super stadiums at those cities? I don't think the Murph or the Edward Jones "concrete" dome is going to cut it with the NFL's appetite for these mega-dollar palaces. Lol.

And let's not forget the Chargers blaming Greg Roman for Herbert's failing (again) in the playoffs, even though Herbert was more dynamic than ever before. So now they are going to bring in McDaniel, who will turn him into a quick strike passer, like Tua, but without the concussions. Okay, sure.

In a strange situation, I can actually see the Chargers finishing 10-7 next year, missing the playoffs, and firing Harbaugh, "the experiment is over", and making McDaniel the HC.
So, Mastermind McDaniel turning Herbert into a pocket passing quick strike artist is supposedly the winning formula?

Now to the real analysis: You're absolutely right that Herbert was more dynamic than ever. His regular season heroics both passing & rushing were quite remarkable given the plethora of injuries to that offense. In fact, he was ranked as the 3rd best QB for the 2025 regular season with the following summary:

"Justin Herbert deserves some sort of award for the courage this NFL season has required from him. He lost one of his starting tackles for the entire season (Rashawn Slater), the other for the majority of it (Joe Alt) and his top running back (Omarion Hampton) for a good chunk, as well, and still found a way to lead the Chargers to an 11-6 finish and return trip to the postseason. In some weeks, Herbert isn't just powering the Chargers through the air but also leading them in rushing (largely out of necessity). However the Chargers' season ends, they should thank Herbert for keeping it alive as long as he has."

Let's be honest here. Herbert is very good during the regular season - especially this past season - but sucks in the postseason (like a few other top QBs out there.). Why? Who knows but I guess they're trying to fix it with OC changes.

On Harbaugh, I think if he misses the playoffs he's done. As long as they make the playoffs every season, Harbaugh stays. I don't think his brother would have been fired if the Ravens had made the playoffs (I think the league likes the Harbaughs).

That's got to be exciting for you? Are you going to try to get tickets?

This is quite historic with the first NFL game being played in the Australian continent.

Who's next? Tokyo? Seoul? Manilla?
I will probably be priced out. I will check out the domestic airfares and ticket prices later but I won't pay for bad seats when I can see it live on TV. I'm retired so money is always on the agenda. I will think about it. Seems that the 49ers might also be playing in Mexico City as the home team. Because the MCG is a large stadium and a cricket ground, the mediocre seats will be a long way from the field. 100 K capacity. At least the players will get a great grass surface to play on. It will be a sell out I have no doubt.Over 7 million NFL fans in Australia now in a population of 25 mill. Australians are big sports fans in general and Melbourne always has good crowds to the elite events. The weather in the first month of spring should be pretty good. not too hot. Melbourne is more extreme than Sydney with weather changes as it is much further south so it can get very cold as well but usually not at that time of the year. Nothing like north American winters.

Which again makes me wonder why minor league football (like the UFL) hasn't taken off bigger, not just in the US but globally. No, the play is not at the level of the NFL. But there have been some exciting games and great plays in the UFL that are plenty entertaining.

New NFL teams wouldn't play in the EJ dome or Qualcom other than maybe 1-2 seasons. A new stadium would need to be built. Municipalities, new laws, bribery, some politician spinning it as a win for the citizens, not just the billionaire who owns the team. I can see it. I mean, look at what the Chiefs convinced the people in eastern Kansas to build for them (In case you haven't been there, I can assure you there is no luxury anything in eastern Kansas. It's pretty old, small towns, hardscrabble).

There will be some interesting free agent QBs available (possibly) this coming season. I'm assuming Daniel Jones will be resigned by the Colts, achilles and all. The list gets interesting as to who may become a starter, and on what team? Mac Jones, Kyler Murray, very likely to get moved. But Malick Willis should get a real shot somewhere. Kirk Cousins is now free. Is Zach Wilson finished? Or should he go become Purdy's backup in SF? And what about Will Levis? Before he was hurt, he was better than Cam Ward. Is Anthony Richardson done? Tre Lance probably is.

Yes it's certainly not a loaded QB draft according the experts. Supposed to be a good one for WR's. With
Jones injured and many teams still having QB issues including the Colts, Vikings, Falcons, Browns etc I don't think there will be enough quality QB's in the draft so retreads and vets might get another chance. The best of them anyway. Be surprised if Tua or Murray were moved with their contract situations and new coaches but you never know. Browns will dump Watson as soon the the money side eases up a little. Either way they are going to take a hit. Maybe the worst trade in NFL history but the Texans won't mind of course as it helped them rebuild quite nicely. The Lance trade was also costly for the 49ers during their SB run re 2019 -23 when their quality players were at their peak while now they are firmly in rebuild mode with only four of their home grown stars left from that period and all of them got injured this season . While Aiyuk is done at the 49ers and CMC was their only star left upright to everyone's surprise along with Trent Williams playing on one leg. Hard to believe that the Cardinals, Lions and Dolphins had even more injuries than the 49ers. The second time the Cardinals played the 49ers it was more of a case of who was playing, not who wasn't playing.

Maye was robbed MVP considering Stafford has a better cast but it’s nice he got one during his career. Super close vote.
Indeed, it was the closest vote since 2003 when Peyton Manning & Air McNair tied declaring co-MVPs.

Stafford & Maye received all the 1st place votes except for three; two for Allen & one surprisingly for Herbert:

I think had Shough played more games, he would have won.

I honestly don't like these awards much, for a few reasons. Maybe because there seems to always be some bias to them? Maybe because it's voted on. Maybe because the Olympics are going, and I really don't like judged events, or think they need to be in an entirely different category.

Emmanwori being at less than 100% because of ankle sprain in practice is a big deal for Sunday. I see his role as key for helping limit Maye’s rushing gains and to shut down short passing game. They’re saying he will play but his overall athleticism is such a factor in his play, so anything less than that will help out the Pats.

I think it would take a new multi-billionaire to get a team in San Diego. Someone to pay for most of a stadium themselves.

I'm not going to dig up the links, but there were numerous stories about poor business decisions made mostly by Dean Spanos, though his sons aren't off the hook. Failed deal I think to partner with Sony at one point. Also I seem to recall he changed his mind many times on stadium proposals, and basically wanted the taxpayers to pay for everything.

Though I suppose this isn't nearly as bad as Art Modell secretly moving the Browns in the middle of the night (literally!). Or Stan Kroenke telling people in St. Louis he loved it there, and the Rams would stay put and he'd wait for a new stadium, while he was about to sign the paperwork to get SoFi built in LA and move the team there. You think the people in San Diego are angry? Try talking to fans in St. Louis!

I've heard they might even franchise tag Daniel Jones. The Colts are definitely sold on him & I can see why. An outstanding season & more than likely playoff bound before his injury. The guy completely turned around his career after the nightmare at NYG.

And what are the Cards going to do with Murray? Do they want to trade him or roll the dice with him one more year? Injuries are starting to be a concern with him - only played 5 games last year. But the clock is ticking on him - how much more patient are the Cards willing to be?

IMO, Willis looks to be the next breakthrough dual-threat (along with Dart). On paper, Willis has it all; size, elite running skills & elite arm strength (rare to find a pure dual-threat with elite arm strength - currently only a handful in the league). He has 6 starts under his belt (3-3) with a 68% comp pct, 99 Rtg, 6 TD passes & 4 rushing TDs. The GB GM has said several teams are interested in him & he doesn't expect Willis to stay with the Pack (watch this closely - I think Willis can win a starting job somewhere)

I think Zach Wilson is done as a potential starter in this league. He's having trouble making it even as a backup. The writing was on the wall when McDaniel promoted Ewers over him for the backup spot, who then started the last 4 games when McDaniel benched Tua. I can't imagine what a psychological blow that must have been to Wilson. I think his future in the league is as a journeyman backup/QB3. If he doesn't llke that he should go play at UFL. Sadly, another high-drafted 1st rd bust.

The GM for Tennessee said the other day he expects Levis to stay with team & that he'll be ready for preseason camp. So, does this mean he's opening up competition for the starting job with Ward or that he expects Willis will be the backup for 2026?

I think AR is done at Indy but still should be given a chance to develop into a starter with another team. Way too much talent there to give up on. But injuries are a mounting concern for him also - he missed most of last season with the serious eye injury that he sustained during warmup drills.

Tre Lance? A bust like Wilson. Journeyman backup written all over this guy. Lol. In fact, I think he was lucky Harbaugh even gave him a roster spot.

That's right, the game will played in your springtime like the UFL games here. How are they going to work out the time zone difference? As I type this, it's 3:43 PM Mountain Standard Time on Friday in Denver & I see it's 9:43 AM on Saturday in Melbourne. So, I wonder how the NFL going to work out the start time & day to accommodate both continents?

16 hour time difference between Melbourne and NYC! Meaning if they played at noon, it would start at 8pm in New York. But this would also mean it would have to be played on Monday during the day (unlikely) or air at the same time as college football in the US on a Saturday night. Unless they played the game on a Saturday there, and it aired Friday night in the US?

As to Arizona and the Cardinals, my guess is Mike LeFleur will take what he gets this year, knowing the team will not only finish in last place, but something like 4-13, Murray might win them another 2 games if fully healthy. If they don't give up on him now, they will after next year. This means come 2027 when that draft is loaded with QBs, he'll get a real shot at drafting Sayin, Arch, Moore, Sellers, etc.

I love the late games as I get to see them late in the morning but the early games are 3: AM here which means I tape the game, the 8: AM games are also fine. Australia's east coast is all on the same time so no difference between Sydney and Melbourne. Brisbane is one hour behind as they don't have daylight saving . I notice a few fans online already complaining about the start time of the game for Americans. I guess the TV power brokers and Goodell will have to sort that out for American viewers re the best case scenario.

Yes the SB is always on Monday in Australia as our Monday is your Sunday so we see the bulk of the games on Mondays.
