Mine too. That's the film Brock said was most accurate to how football really was. At least back in the day.

Like most Oliver Stone films, parts of Any Given Sunday are great. Other parts aren't. While kind of hokey, I liked Radio. I liked the way the sport was portrayed, and I liked Ed Harris. Cuba Gooding was reaching a little, but okay enough in it. Didn't like Invincible as much, though some people did. Semi-Tough was silly, but the original Longest Yard is really good. What am I forgetting?

I think not much changed since "North Dallas". Only the sums. Put two or three zeros behind any $ amount and more hi-tech drugs, you have the present. That movie still rules...

Too much "pop" in given sunday. So it´s not too good. I liked James Woods as someone like Dr. Rosenfeld the most.

"Radio" was also ok.

"Invincible" i really liked. One of the better football movies.

"Longest yard" was too far from reality. So i didn´t really liked it.

I also liked "Blind Side" and "Heaven can wait".

"Friday Night", "Titans" and "The Program" were good college movies. But the best college movie was "Rudy".

"Waterboy" was funny. The best football comedy.

PS: Alpe you my can help out here. When i was 8 or 9 i saw a great basketball movie. All i remember is that there was a black (NBA-like)player and he somehow got into riots. That´s all i remember. It seems it was kind of political and drama. The movie must be from 1970 to 1978. I am searching for this since a long time, but since i can´t remember more details i wasn´t successful.

Hmmm. How about Hit the Open Man (Or Cornbread Earl & Me)? But it's referred to as a blacksploitation film and I never saw it. I'm scratching my head here. Cornbread Earl & Me clip.

Actually, reading the Wiki, I think that could be it. But it's not about a pro. Hmmm. Follow this link.

There was also a terrific film made in 1980 called Inside Moves that has a basketball player in it who is white. But the film is about troubled people of various races. Great movie that's locked in a vault somewhere. Clip here.

There was also Drive, He Said, it was about basketball. Clip here.

A James Caan film in the 70's called The Gambler. That has a couple scenes where he gets a basketball player to shave points. Clip here.

Bottom of the barrel here. I'm stumped.

Peyton Manning has been cleared and should be completely healed. Both the original surgeon cleared him, and a second physician who said if Manning were his son, he'd tell him to go play. One doctor said he was so healed he could probably play this Sunday if he were in the Superbowl. The range of motion issue brought up last week has nothing to do with his healing, and he simply stretching and practicing.

So, where's he going to play? Well, he apparently is having dinner with Larry Fitzgerald this week. Foxxy and I have both said the Cardinals are a very good fit. They have one of the best receivers in football, a decent team that really needs only a QB, a good coach, and they've been to the big dance in recent years. He could also end up in KC or Washington. Two intriguing places are NY Jets and SF. If he gets mentioned in NY then Mark Sanchez is certainly done there. This would be such a vote of no confidence in him. SF is possible because of how good they are. It could make Alex Smith expendable, tradeable, or maybe a steal to the right team. Seattle was reportedly interested in him when the lockout ended before they picked up Jackson, and I could actually see Smith doing well in Carroll's system there.

To me this is fantastic news. I always thought Peyton was an incredible player, way better than his brother, and would have hated to see his career end like that.

invincible for me.

or friday night lights (read the book too, interesting read), though the ending just kills me, every time.

or north dallas forty.

any given sunday could have been magnificent, but the it seemed a bit over the top though, eg the dude losing the eye? seriously?

so i've bet the house on New England this weekend, to win by 4 or more.

Ergo, carn the PATS!

You bet he opposite of Foxxy!

More talk from the Giants. Jason Pierre-Paul said that Brady folded under pressure when they played earlier this year, and the Giants got in his head, and he says the Giants are even better now. Jacobs was saying he doesn't care that they run their mouth. This is either a sign of confidence and fun, or a problem with overconfidence. The Pats remain quiet on it, Brady simply responded by saying the Giants are a good team.

I'll say what I did before: Turnovers and mistakes may make this game, but the Giants have been better of late on both sides of the ball, which is why I picked them to win by a narrow margin. But another part of me says that with the Giants talking, and the Patriots not, Belicheat, McDaniels, O'Brien, Scarnecchia (and Brady) have to be completely scheming and burning up inside with the desire to win, and win big, and it wouldn't shock me at all if my dream of a 40-24 finish came true.

It must be "The Gambler". You know youth defines the later years of life. ;)
Anyway, thanks a lot for your work. :)
Now i have to look deeper into the linked movies.

The eye was BS. And all this MTV-like cuts were disturbing. North Dallas didn´t need that crap...

So you bet on 3? Some books offered 2 1/2 where a 3 point win would be enough for you. But don´t worry. Alpe dreamed of a 40-24 blow out for NE. ;)

JPP, yes, yes, blabla.... Where did Brady fold under pressure? He threw a TDP on 4th down on the last real NE-Drive. Man i am more and more p...d of this Giants. They talk more than the 15-1 Bears. If i´d be on the field sunday, i´d go out there as mad as "Tooz" in "North Dallas".

agreed, so often in movies less is more.

and in A.G.S. it was MORE MORE MORE.

yeah, i am in a work syndicate, my turn to bet this week, so i'm hoping for the blowout too. :D

Here's what I saw in my dream: About 15 seconds to go in the game, score was 40-24 Patriots and they were going to win. I think the Giants had the ball on about their 6 yard line, no time outs, and were done. There was a shot of Brady on the sideline showing he had thrown for over 400 yards and was named the MVP.

If it comes true I'm changing my avatar to Nostradamus!

Can't believe anyone dreams about the SB.

Uh, did you maybe see any sequence of lotto-like numbers too, Alpe?:p

It´s normal. Thinking 24/7 about football leads to dreams about it. I had mine too in the past. :)

If Alpe is right, i´ll get his lotto numbers if he dreams of them. I was the first in the "waiver wire" some posts ago. ;)

Yeah, let the SB be over at haltime like in the 80s/early 90s. Then i can shift my attention to my delightful beers from halftime on + celebrating a NE win for a full half. It would be great. :D

Sad that the season's coming to a close.

It does mean that spring is coming and the cycling season's about to start but it's a hell of a long off season.

As for sunday? I'm not making any predictions. The Giants have been playing well and can certainly beat NE as they proved before, without their No1 RB, WR and centre.

But this is the Superbowl against Brady and Belichick and they will be seriously out for revenge after last time.

I've got to get some sleep Sunday night but I think I'll be waking up regularly and checking the score!

I did love the TC quote though "Humble enough to prepare, Confident enough to perform"

I think I'll be using that one when coaching!

Jesus.... two Pats (Vollmer and Light, the all important OLers) have a flu and even Bill is having kind of sniffles (seen on the press conferences). Hopefully it´s not spreading before monday.

ESPN seemed to think Light was worse on Monday, improving now, and should be okay by Sunday.

I'm actually happy this season is about over. There were some great games, and some cool streaks and surges, The Tebow story was fun, I liked watchigng the Lions. Good to see Cam Newton play so well, and Andy Dalton too. But the entire playoffs were somewhat of a shame. The fact Denver got in instead of Tennessee. Denver and NYG getting home games they didn't really deserve. Denver beating the Steelers. The Saints, Packers, Ravens (49ers to a lesser extent) all losing the way they did. And we're stuck with two teams I'm tired of seeing. Sigh.

That sounds to depressing. Are you in a shock like me (Armstrong)?

It´s not that bad. At least one team who really deserved to go to the SB got there. Going 13-3, scoring 500+, playing on high level from day one... I mean there was no better team in the AFC this year. And nobody, not even GB, won 83 % of their games the last two seasons (including post season).

What also makes football so great is that the season is relative short. Before everybody get tired, they season ends perfectly. Here in germany it´s soccer 365 days (outdoor-indoor-outdoor-cup here, cup there... bahh) even if you are not watching. That´s tiring.

Well, the Patriots are a very well run organization. Superbly coached, and Brady is great. And they have won, what, 11 games in a row now? I'm just tired of seeing them in the Superbowl. But I am hoping they'll win, as I think it will be better for the sport if a flawed 13-3 team beats a 9-7 team who frankly gets there on luck as much as skill. It comes down to that as much as anything.

I agree with you on the length of the season. The worst thing they could do is expand the season, or playoffs, as I've said before. It's almost too long as it is, and thank God it's not like the NBA or MLB which are nearly 8 months long.

No. Was never certain he'd be indicted for a federal crime. Though of course he doped, only the uninformed, or those of blind faith would think otherwise. Maybe USADA will do something, maybe not. Maybe the investigation papers will be sealed, maybe released, maybe leaked and into a book, maybe not. But I frankly don't care about the guy. He's an arrogant bully, and yesterday's news. Part of a dirty time in the sport I'd really rather forget.

Comment if you wish, but I'm going to stick to Football and the SB with all future posts here.

As much as i hated the Pats, i think they are no more flawed than any other club. It just happened by chance that Beli was caught like Ulle was while Armstrong rode on...

Nature will stop them (greedy NFL owners). The longer the reg. season, the more depleted post season rosters will get. They just can´t go much further unless they want to risk the NFL becoming another farce like the NBA. May they can make 18 games by cutting pre season to 2 games. But no more than that. What i "fear" more is that they expand the number of playoff teams. Then 9-7 teams in the SB will be a common "spectacle". Hello NHL... and truly meaningless regular seasons. We got a taste of it last year (Seahawks) and this year.
NBA/MLB: It isn´only the 8 months, but they play every day. It´s like teethbrushing. Nothing special. Day by day routine. Boring.

Expert picks are in. Courtesy of ESPN here. Picks there are 6-3 in favor of the Giants.
Courtesy of USA Today, their experts pick 5-3 in favor of the Giants.

All five CBS Sports experts pick the Giants.

Fox Sports guys have the Giants 8-3.

Peter King picks the Giants. Boomer Esiason picks the Patriots.

With all this, it makes you wonder why Vegas has the Patriots as favorites?

Because these are the real experts. Trust me. I could write on this issue for the next few hours and skip sleep.
Here are the Vegas picks:
http://www.vegasinsider.com/nfl/story.cfm/story/1232359

9-2 Patriots!

After all, if no serious fixing attempt was successful to loot vegas and worldwide sportsbooks, and NFL security did their jobs, NE will win.

Interesting!

Herm Edwards said this morning on ESPN he likes the Pats. But he said there are other factors of course. Turnovers, penalties, mistakes, etc.

One of the key things Edwards said was the Pats need to be able to run the hurry up offense, and do so successfully. He thinks if they can do that - and they did several times this year - they can move the ball very effectively. Edwards also mentioned they need to run the ball some, and disguise runs as passes, etc. On the other side of the ball he thinks Eli should be able to get plenty of protection and hit his receivers all day, and a key is going to be if they can get in the end zone instead of field goals, which the Pats have been good at stopping of late. He thinks the Pats best bet to stop them is to run a lot of dime packages with often only three guys rushing, and use the 8 men dropping back to try to confuse Eli and the Giants offense, because they can't line up and stop them in a normal set. This reminds me of how the Jets beat the Pats last year, with constant dime and quarter packages, sometimes having just two down linemen, or one or two safeties lining up in the LB slots. Will the Pats play this way, and challenge Eli to beat them? Interesting take.

Yes, heared Beli in his yesterday press conference talking abou that. But he said if the hurry up don´t work, they´ll "do some other things". I think he is pretty much prepared.

That pretty much sums up what i said in my game previews. I think i am ready to coach football. Just need to know about the dirty little tricks. ;)
Just kidding. I think i am not a good motivator, as i learned when i was baseball player/coach back in the 90s. To be honest, after 2 games the experiment was over when my pitcher refused to intentionally walk an opposing batter.

PS: I think the Pats are very good in redzone defense since they start to move up back in 2001. It could be either FG´s or EZ-Ints by Eli. I prefer the latter. :)
