It appears in the press that Barta failing to beat Amador at Cervinia and Huzarki's 2nd place into Assisi justified their wildcard. Peaking for Coppi e Bartoli seems foolish now.

Should've been Acqua & Sapone, as 99% of us knew all along.

I think they did decent-ish, for a 3rd tier team. Of course, they should have done much better to vindicate Acquarone, but it would have been unrealistic to expect much more from them (Barta was a little disappointing though), and it's not their fault that they were invited.

More wildcards = aggressive and better stages/racing. The real problem is the WT system. Could do with a system like top 10/12/14 WT are automatically invited and the rest are chosen by RCS.

They were visible, they were aggressive, they were a little bit of luck away from a couple of stage wins. Don't think you can ask anything more of a wild card team.

the italian wild card teams actually delivered. Net App's performance was way below par.

I was really hoping Barta would win stage 14. A NetApp rider beating a Aouth American AND an Androni rider, I think Ryo's head would have exploded. Oh well. Maybe next year!

They perfomed above expectations yet that was still not satsifactory.
It was clearly evident throughout the race that their riders were not up to the level of the other riders in the race and so no amount of minor contributions will change the fact that it was very unlikely (even considering the fact that Barta & Huzarski came close) that they would ever win a stage.

Farnese easily had the potential with Pozzatto and Guardini + even you could argue Rabbottini and Colnago certainly had that potential with Pozzovivo and even to an extent Modolo (even possibly Battaglin) and Androni of course had Rujano who certainly has the capabilities to win a stage in the Giro even if he wasnt capable of doing so this time around and even possibly Ferrari.

Rabottini is a very good up and coming rider, but you are rewriting history here.

Edit: having checked he is older than I thought he was.

But anyway, given his allround ability Huzarski would have hardly been the worst bet in a breakaway group on the 3 obvious breakaway stages.

he was sick for half of the giro (suffering from food poisoning) so I think he will be satisfied just with making it to Milan.

I think all in all they did reasonable. Barta made the most of his opportunities and Schorn delivered a couple of top 10 results in the sprint. The only one who kind of underperformed was Brändle, the remainder of the team is just to weak to deliver any kind of results.

so, did they deserve to be invited instead of A&S? I don't think so, but nevertheless, they did as best they could

I thought Huzarki and Barta were good to get 2nd on stages.

The rest of Net App was not great though, the absence of Konig hurt any real GC top 10 aspirations.

I agree that A S should have been invited with Betancur, Garzelli and Di Luca.
