My old crankset, SRAM Truvativ Firex 1.1 [I think], is done for. Somehow the left pedal keeps 'falling' of.

So I need a new one. I have been looking for the same but with no result. Yes, I can buy the 150$ 3.3 new version of the Firex but that is beyond my budget now.

What are the points I need to look at? Can I for instance mount a cheaper Shimano octalink on it? That would save me about 100$

Thanks in advance.

Not directly related to this post but....

Hmm...whenever a friend asks me for help regarding a pedal/attachment problem it's always the left one.

I wonder why?

Yeah it is always the left one, eh? I can never get the pedal thread to start screwing in; so I just drill out the crank arm thread and glue the pedal in with epoxy.

You might be able to repair the crank arm by drilling out the hole and installing a HELICOIL. I don't know for sure if there is a lefthand threaded helicoil, but you can do a search and find out...

There are left handed threaded inserts - I've used them in aerospace applications. But a specific drill size and a left handed tap are required for the installation. It may be lower cost just to buy a new crankset. I buy items like that from the McMaster Car catalog.

However drilling and tapping the crank to a new diameter will reduce the amount of material around the insert and thus increase stresses leading to a possible unsafe condition.

Errr. I should have added one of these ;). Oh wait. You were answering the OP?

If the threads in the arm are still ok (not too sloppy or worn), then the pedal should be able to be tighten adequately. Maybe use anti-sieze on the pedal threads instend of grease. Or maybe the bearings in the pedal are bad and are causing the pedal axle to unscrew.
