New Road Bike for rookie

Hey,

I've just made the decision to grab a road bike. I haven't ridden for a fair few years, but I have done some pretty decent miles in Australia on a MTB. I'm in London now so it seems sensible to grab a road bike while I'm over here.

I'm willing to spend a little but not a lot. What should I look out for in one bike over another in the £500-£700 market? Thru work and salary sacrifice arrangements I get about 40% off over the 12 months so it's a good time to buy. I have to buy at Evans Cycles, that's the only rule...

Any hints and tips would be great.

Cheers

Get fitted and take different bikes for test rides. Buy the bike that you feel best suits your needs and style. There is probably little difference between different brands and models as far as design and componentry are concerned in your price bracket (aluminium frame, maybe steel if you're lucky), and even on high end bikes it ultimately comes down to test riding bikes until you find the best one for you. Good luck and welcome back to cycling.

looking on evans at that price range, they are all much of a muchness.. similar components and groupsets...

personally, i like the bianchi or the specialised they have, but there isnt really much between them..

stick to your budget and buy right size / best feel bike with the best running gear / wheels you can get.

sticking to your budget for you first road bike is the key. that way if you don't ride much, or buy the wrong size bike you haven't over committed.

and if you do really get into it, regardless of how much you spend now, you'll always be thinking up the upgrade!

Get what fits you that is the most important thing in a bike. It is tough to walk into an LBS and find a sales person that will be willing to swap out stems and saddles and make sure what you are walking out with is the best bike for you. I don't pick bikes anymore by name, I try to work with what works for the person riding the bike. Most the bike shop owners on this forum will agree with me (at least I hope).

Find a good local shop that is willing to work with you and fit you. Bike brand and components mean nothing if can't ride the bike.

As others have mentioned, getting a bike that fits you is extremely important. You mention that you have to buy at Evans - I was told a story by someone a while back about the Evans staff trying to sell her a bike which she didn't fit, so don't take their word for it. I guess go in with an idea of what you want, and try as many as possible.
