For better or worse, the 2 most marketable female xc skiiers are very disliked by the board.
I don't get it. If you want the sport to grow, you need people that draw attention.

Good race from del Rio again. Probably one who benefits a bit from the unified waxing today?

She must have benefitted from the unified waxing which for me is something that should always happen in the World Cup to level the playing field.

People react negatively to aggressively pushed, forced narratives.

They are "the most marketable female XC skiers" because the media has decided they are so and is insistent on marketing them to the exclusion of all else. That begets a counter-reaction from sections of the fanbase. This is hardly a new thing.

They are also the most marketable as they are incredibly successful, attractive and cover 2 of the most important markets.

I get why people are annoyed at having something stuffed down their throats, but some of the vitriol on here is nuts. It's not their faults.

Plus one of them was caught doping and the other one is an actress (Ebba Andersson spelled it out nicely earlier this winter).

They can't help the hype, sure, and how inelegant, blatant and constant it is really doesn't help that perception one bit, but they can help the part that is impacted by their personalities, and the way that they play into that hype, admittedly some more than others. Magdalena Neuner, for example, never elicited such a response.

The other thing is that the sport and its media look to try to sell people to casuals, rather than to the existing fanbase. To many fans, Therese in particular was somebody who detracted from the entertainment, because she was so dominant that it ceased to be fun to watch. Cheering for the overdog gets boring very quickly for many.

Honestly nowadays Frida Karlsson is more marketable than Johaug. It's women's sport and as much at it is annying to say, looks play a huge role in that regard...

Tarjei is out of the sprint with a fever. Hopes to be back for mass start. That's not how you want to bring your glittering career to an end in front of home fans.

Joannes was probably hoping he could get between himself and SHL to improve any points gained

I know there is a mental/random stats thread on the cycling page, but how did Jon Age Tyldum win 2 overall titles with only 2 career race wins (I'm bored at work and on wiki).

My memory of Tyldum is that he was a good shot, at times extremely fast compared to most others back then. His skiing was less impressive on an average day. He probably won the overall titles because of consistency.

There were of course also fewer races back then and only sprints and individuals, so there were fewer opportunities to win in general and it was more costly to have a bad day or to miss races.

What a battle we have between Preuß and Jeanmonnot. I kind of expected Preuß would be pipped as usual, but luck was on her side this time around.

Grotian, on the other hand, is out of it now, cause despite only having one miss she won't make the pursuit.

This could have been decisive for the overall but 35 points is still a small gap, Preuß needs to keep shooting well and skiing fast.

Norway with a XC skiing level dominance in the men today, unless Lægreid has a bad day he should be able to win the overall.

Jasmi Joensuu won the sprint cup, without a victory and only one podium. That tells you all about the motivation of the top skiers to race the WC’s in a championship season and also the lame points system.

Lægreid finally wins the World Cup overall, deserved win after a few years trying.
