It was one vote away from Eliasch’s voting to break the tie, and obviously had it been 12-10 in Russia’s favor, they would have been allowed to start, allegedly. I say allegedly because I am sure the ones voting for the ban would have kept pursuing for it.

In any case, totally unnecessary and discriminatory. It has no bearing on the situation on the ground.

I for on am a little disappointed we won't get to see if Linn Svahn would have kept her pledge to boycott the Games had the Russians been allowed in. ;-)

Agree on the bolded.

No Swede had any problem to swim next to a Russian at the Aquatic Worlds...

Hell, we even had Russian weightlifters at the Worlds in NORWAY!

Pathetic behavior by the Scandinavian trio, and worst of all is that Russia could actually send only one man and one woman to Olympics. Probably Korostelev and Stepanova/Daria Nepryaeva. That's not even that much of competition anyway...

Some are saying that nobody would have boycotted had the ban been lifted. I don't know. I don't trust what some of them say anymore.

Yeah, what winter sports does Denmark have? There have been Danish skiers, but none of them too competitive. One of them skied in Norway and went to college in Anchorage, Alaska.
Do they have a bit of speedskating? But FIS related they are pretty much a non-factor in all sports.

According to Italian media Norway, Sweden, Finland and France said that they'd boycott it if any Russians were allowed.

Would like some countries to boycott Norway because of that they were doing in the ski jumping of the Nordic ski World Championships.
I mean, that was a blatant cheating and deserves a ban as well, IMO.

Julia Simon appeared before criminal court in Albertville today and acknowledged her guilt and apologized to the victims including Braissaz and a staff member on the team. I wonder what will happen now

Three months suspended prison for Simon plus a monetary fine. The Ski federation will decide if she will also be suspended from Biathlon

Yes, that was a huge scandal that got swept away, big stain for the moral gods from Norway who also played their matches against Israel in the FIFA Qualifiers without any issues. I fully expected them to boycott those games given their high moral standards.

No Russians in FIS competitions in the coming season too. So Klaebo can really get 6 golds in Olympics.

Amundsen and Krüger should beat him in the 10k skating but he will still take the gold medal Winter Olympics record, unfortunately.

I'm not 100% sure they'll be chosen for that race. Wouldn't be the first time we see Norway sacrifice their own for Klaebo.

According to the Skirious Problem podcast (Clugnet is athlete representative, so he tends to know these kind of things), in case the ban was to be lifted the Russians would be able to participate only as neutral athletes, and with the rules for who can be counted as a neutral athlete Stepanova wouldnt qualify because of her public views on the war (and the same would go for more or less every established russian skier as they are all connected to the military), so it would've been skier like Korostelev and younger Nepryeava.

So 47 countries were asked about whether the Russians should be allowed back, 60% of those voted yes.

A FIS member said that Norway (shocking) overruled/rejected so it was canceled.

I dont think this is how things work, but I might be wrong.
The way you present it, it seems like there was a vote and that Norway vetoed it. From my understanding it is the FIS Council that votes (the result of this voting has been published earlier in this thread), and Norway doesnt have any veto right.

I think the correct presentation of what happened is more like this:
- A poll were held, where 60% of the countries said yes for opening up for Russian participacion. Norway (and likely Sweden, Finland etc) said no.
- The FIS Council had did the voting and said no (voting result publish in this thread)
- A FIS member believes that Norway (and likely also Sweden/Finland) being against Russian return made the FIS Council to vote no.

It's according to Jan Petter Saltvedt.

The way I understand it in Russian media, all member countries were asked to participate in the survey, but only 47 reacted.

"(gt) a survey was conducted among the national associations-members of the FIS, in which 60% of voters voted for the return of Russians, 40% - against. In total, 47 out of 141 FIS member countries took part in the voting."

So 28 countries voted for Russia to be accepted as neutral athletes at the Olympics.

But yeah, it was not binding, but just to get an idea. Or maybe to influence those unsure how to vote at the council - but the result of the survey was more of a "who cares" than a convincing yes.

There was an interview with Linn Svahn in Swedish media where she told regret not being cyclist rather than skier. She has always done MTB but also started with road during her shoulder injury and she were even close participating in the national championships but was stopped by her coach. She seems to follow professional cycling closely and even joked about doing co-commentating. Big fan of Pauline apparently!
