You know what, yes, I think he was pre-empting another Evans attack (he surely remembers the Van den Broek/Evans two-step at the Dauphine).

Using Van den Broek to claim first dibs against Armstrong (I though he would be using A. Shleck to do this today, but, hey, who cares; it's the same maneuvre).

Smart play.

Agreed, it was indeed but it was also a smart play by Lotto. They're pretty much screwed already but their only chance is to attack until their lungs bleed so at least they're going down swinging.

"I wanted to take advantage of this stage but it was hard with the headwind," Contador said. "I would have liked to get more time on them but I'm happy."

Said Astana director sportif John Bruyneel, "The stage decided who was the strongest. This morning, we didn't give any specific instructions. I just told them [Contador and Armstrong] to talk to each other, and do what they have to do. Alberto was strong; he is a great climber and there are three summit finishes at this Tour. So this was one of his possibilities today."

Any word on Astana leadership?

With the positions of Contador and Armstrong reversed on the classement général, does that make the Spaniard the leader? "No," Contador said, "the race will decide who of us is best."

"That wasn't really to the plan," Armstrong said of Contador's attack that almost earned him the maillot jaune, "but I didn't expect him to go by the plan, so no surprise. It was windy, so it was hard to be alone in the wind. The wind wasn't conducive, you saw a big group there; [there will be] plenty of days at end of this Tour when there are only a couple of guys together."

So (1) Andrew Hood is full of crap with his op-ed on Velo News and (2) Contador isn't taking anything for granted. One of the reason he's my favorite cyclist right now: talks softly and turns a mean crank when it matters.

Lance needs to win to prove he was never on drugs and to prove that a 37 yr old is not an old man. Contador is a nonentity that cant speak english and would drive the tour into boring obscurity. Contador won one lousy tour and that could easily be a fluke. Contador needs to defer to this elder. Its not all about athletic prowess. Its more about entertainment. I would probably get banned if I described just how much contempt I have for the twit Contador.

Oh oh. Another unhappy LA fan.

I didn't know not speaking english makes one a non-entity. For a non-entity, he can sure ride a bike well too.

Contador also won two other grand tours (you did know there are two other grand tours didn't you? You know, the ones that LA never won).

Finally, I thought the tour was an athletic event. Silly me. Guess the entertainers will show up soon.

And please, describe how much contempt you have for Contador. I'd love to hear it.

Question: What is the usual collective conclusion when you see a particular GC contender just take off and appear to have a substantially greater ability than all the other GC contenders??? What is usually the collective assesment here since the natural physiological differences at the top levels of cycling are so miniscule??? What accouts for this seemingly almost un-natural ability to leave everyone else behind like they are standing still??? Can't remember . . . .

Armstrong would know this very very well. Ask him.

We have now reached a whole new world of absurdity: Lance fans accusing other riders of doping. LOL.

+1

Armstrong twitters about everything else, why not cut and past the question to him?
