"Manager Paul Doyle said Powell, who will run in the 100 metres heats at the London Olympics on Saturday, was woken at 2215 local time on Thursday to undergo the test.

"We love the fact that they are testing but we wish they would be more sensitive to his preparations," Doyle said.

"Less than 48 hours before his first competition, he lost a very important night's sleep."

Hmm......10:15 pm tragic...lost a whole nights sleep.

:p

The 100 metres is the pharmacists race. The athletes are guinea pigs or lab rats, whichever you prefer.

Interesting read - interview with John Leonard (Director of US swim coaches association) - he certainly isn't backing off his initial statement and makes some very good points.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/olympi...ctor-steps-up-chinese-doping-allegations.html

He raises some good points but really this should be kept behind closed doors for the time being. People seem to forget that in this particular case we are dealing with a child. If there was any doping it would be absolutely deplorable that a child would be given drugs to compete, I would go so far as to say criminal. But in dealings with the press which can be fairly harsh people seem to be forgetting its a child that the allegations are been thrown at. If she is innocent , which you could argue she is anyway due to her age and its not her who should be held to task, then it could be fairly traumatic.

Just a thought.

Russian track cyclist Victoria Baranova has failed a drugs test.

is somebody counting how many of the positives are from eastern europe?

are they being scapegoated?
or are they economizing on masking agents?

TRACK CYCLING

World champion cyclist and BBC Sport pundit Mark Cavendish on Russian track cyclist Victoria Baranova testing positive for testosterone: "It is frustrating. Our sport has been dragged through a lot, really dragged through the mud. It is always in the spotlight. Our sport has put in so much money and effort, and a few individuals just don't care and it's not fair on the rest of us. It really winds me up. It's really disappointing."

The test was in Belarus, so it's a bit odd to think they are being scapegoated.

I don't get how anyone can test positive at the Olympics. All the preparation should have been done in training then stopped before tapering for the games.

How can someone test positive for testosterone? Did they bring it with them to London?

It also would not surprise me if Eastern European countries are targeted. How much money can the Olympics make from those countries compared to the western ones or the devloping Asian ones?

Well, read the article. This one seems slam dunk from the mouth of the rider. No excuses and no reason for conspiracy.

Exactly, just look at the record holders since Calvin Smith in 1983:
Ben Johnson big time roid user.
Carl Lewis (my hero, still) some cough mixture in 1988.
Burrell clean (?).
Bailey clean (???).
Greene payed Hereida, had doping coach Smith when his times exploded, a big time doper w/o a doubt.
Montgomery busted,
Gatlin busted,
Powell clean (LOL)...
And now Bolt beats them all clean with alien times (even his mate Blake got caught)? That´s as big a joke as Armstrong.
Clean athlets needed 15 years to break Hines´ record by 0.02 seconds. Then the dopers came and spoiled the record by 0.35 (!!!) seconds in a span of 20 years. Unreal.

It seems to me that testing _at_ the Olympics is almost worthless. It is just for show. Only the stupid and careless will be caught.

Well, yeah, it's why the fanboys are swarming with "where's the evuhdence! You've got nutting!"

Still, they catch idiots, so it's good they do it.

The 'almost' is the key. But it is mainly a PR move.

The only things you are going to catch are the diuretics for the weight class folks who have to make a weight.

it's rather unsatisfactory at best.
the smalltime harmless pickpockets go to jail, the bigtime white collar frauds celebrate.

That is exactly it. The small time doper who is self administering gets caught. The countries with large budgets and sophisticated doping programs run by doctors not only get away with it by setting world record after world record but act shocked that some poor SOB from east Bumfarkastan gets caught.

doping coached jeter runs 10.83 in round 1.

edit: reaction time was only 0.176, with a perfect start... Well, the FloJo heartattack dope record is in big danger

Or an endurance athlete micro-dosing EPO to keep his/her retics up after a blood bag.

Flo-Jo's 10.49 was obviously wind-aided. Her 2nd best time is 10.61.

So then... easier to break. And we all know FloJo was doped full time. I loved her voice, btw. ;)

Fraser just ran 11.00 w/o breathing after the finish. Our german girl (with a normal woman waist), a europe champ, could barely give a interview after the 100 meters. So it´s not all freaks out there. Allyson Felix also still looks like a woman. Hope she wins somehow clean(ish). She´s seems to be a talent by nature like Ashford and cough medicine taker Carl Lewis...
