I think they bluffed, and the peloton called it.

They are going/went full out to maintain the 2:30, so that the peloton would think they couldn't chase them down anymore, hoping that they would concede. However, they kept on chasing regardless the stabilised time difference, and are closing the gap because the 2 are running out of juice...

I really hope they can hold the peloton off though!
