Old V New

Back in the day when I started following cycling there was professional teams and amateur teams, a clear line of distinction bewtween one and the other. There was some pro races that were open to amatuers Tour of Vaucluse, Tour de l'Avenir, Mild Race(GB) etc but most of the times races were one or the other.

Now there is UCI ProTour, UCI Professional Continental and UCI Continental teams and to me the lines have become blurred and mixed, for example the upcoming Tour of Ireland has teams from all three categories competing in the same race. Teams from certain divisons cannot always compete in some races.

My question, which system do you prefer? Was the old Pro/Amateur system or the current system better.
