And they did the closest distance the day before.

So I presume it's just specialized there is no overlap in the competititors

Isn't the SC mostly for runners who aren't fast enough to make their national teams in the other events?

G. Thomas wins!
Alfred 2nd.

BTW, I really want to see the footage when Alfred returns to Saint Lucia!
I'm watching the replay now because while they were racing I was taking a shower and had promptly put my hair in a ponytail afterward so I can pretend I'm Cole Hocker who had just won the gold...

Beautiful run by Gabby Thomas and congrats to Alfred on the silver also!

Fun fact. Hitler congratulated Jesse Owens and shook his hand in private, while the US president Roosevelt completely ignored him. Owens said he was treated better in the Third Reich than in the US
You have to remember that Germany was “playing nice” in how it acted and what it let the world see during the Olympics, with the idea of keeping England, France, and U.S. ambivalent (or with heads in sand) as they planned their coming invasions.

I’m not sure that’s it. There is a big gap between the 1500 and then the 5,000, the gap that separates “middle distance” and “long distance.” There are bound to be some runners whose performance sweet spot is roughly in between the two. Consider how few athletes we see do both 800 and 1500 even though the difference is only 700 meters.

Times have changed quite a bit on that front. We used to see athletes splitting distance most typically being 100-200, 200-400, 800-1500, and 5000-10000. The steeplechase was a bit of an anomaly as a result. It's less the case now as we are seeing a larger number of 400-800 athletes and 1500-5000 consequently seems to be following from that (also there have been a lot of flat 3000s run on the DL and Continental Gold circuit this last year or two).

At the moment I think on the men's side there's a bit of a fad for the steeplechase in North Africa inspired by Soufiane El Bakkali, much as there was a spate of North African middle distance runners that came about in the wake of Hicham el Guerrouj a couple of decades ago.

Also Noureddine Morceli and Said Aouita.

As a swede I have a great time watch the Olympics after the Duplantis show yesterday I turned my attention towards world no1 Henrik von Eckermann in horse riding today

Wow, not that I follow horse stuff closely but I haven't seen anything like this, certainly not in Olympic competition. Looks like the horse might have gotten spooked or he was just saying piss off to the rider in his own way...

Is Eckermann okay?

He is ok.

I think he just came wrong into the first fences, the horse took an extra leap and then Eckermann almost lost balance and the horse thought he was supposed to jump the start gate instead of going around on the stretch.

As I understood a silly misstake certainly not expected from the World Champion that looked set to win the Olympics.

People in Sweden in general seems to think it’s really funny. Horse riding is not the most popular sport by the masses here.

Men's 5000m qualifiers right now, a bunch of runners tripped and fell in one of the heats with only about 200m left to go because it was just too crowded. The heat running now which includes Ingebrigtsen isn't much smaller.

Also on tap is men's high jumping - fun to see Tamberi and Barshim competing against each other in the Olympics again!

Edit: and just as I posted this Barshim looks like he might have injured his leg, he's getting medics to look at him at any rate.:(
