I surprise myself that I've enjoyed boxing so much in these games. Quality vary among weight classes, but when it's high, it's always absorbing. Looks like back to back entertaining finals now in the light weight then light heavy weight.

The women's competition have lots of interesting characters, like that 20-year old Polish featherweight.

What can be said about synchronized/artistic swimming... I can appreciate it's difficult at the top level but to me it has always look rather humorous. And, when I see this artistic swimming I'm thinking Esther Williams and the Golden Age of Hollywood, I'm not thinking Olympic sport.

Why is it that they can't/never show WR (OR/current fastest time) splits in athletics like they do in swimming?
That would be nice if they did. Although for the viewer it might be misleading sometimes: swimming is a bit more steady pacing (although they do change stroke rates) than the tactical middle distance races at the Olympics & world’s, that might have slow initial laps.

Random question:
What's the shortest time someone has ever held an Olympic Record? Because I think Alekna's 5 minutes in the discus throw might be up there.
Of course, in a lot of competitions, by the time a new record has been set, the round/heat/whatever will already be over.

not sure it's a fair comparison, as speed climbing has only been added recently, but in the Women's seeding round, three new OR were set within the first three runs:

- ZHOU Yafei 6.54s
- MADE RITA DM 6.52s
- HUNT Emma 6.36s

Aleksandra Miroslaw then went on to improve it another two times.

In a more traditional sport, the WR was broken in three consecutive runs in the women's team sprint the other day:

- Germany 45.377s
- New Zealand 45.348s
- Great Britain 45.338s

And I suppose one of the things that made the situation in the discus so particularily note worthy was that it had stood for 20 years, then got beaten twice in the time it takes to go to the toilet.

Two hours of swimming in that river, mixed with a bit of "jostling" with other swimmers... hard work for a medal.

I missed the race, but I'm happy to learn that Van Rouwendaal managed to win her second Olympic title.
I wonder if we'll see Ledecky go for it in LA, but that will probably only happen if the competition on the 400m and 800m gets a lot stiffer over the next 4 years.

Bol vs Sydney today, unreal battle ahead of us
Sydney will still win, she still has the upper hand in times, but at least we will see a competition. In McLaughlin's absence Bol has beaten the rest of the field all ends up for two years with McLaughlin's fans basically announcing all those achievements to be worthless because she didn't beat Sydney. We haven't seen them face off in two years, because Bol runs a full international calendar anywhere and everywhere, and McLaughlin-Levrone, even when healthy which she hasn't been for much of the last two years, only runs sparingly and only at Eugene.

I expect Bol to get inside 51" and beat the field by over a second (depending on what Jones pulls out of the bag, given the US' insane athletics program so far) but still be about half a second off McLaughlin who will break her own WR.

And then we'll have to put up with the crowing of the Sydney stans for at least another year, and possibly the remainder of Bol's career if SML does switch to the 400 flat and go after Koch's record.

Both American teams won their heats despite having poor baton changes. At the end of the day it's just another day at the office.

Only 1.92 for Thiam in the Heptathlon high jump, which KJT also managed to get over. Hall cleared 1.89, so it looks like it will be a close battle between them.

New Zealand move to the top of the medal table standings for countries that have never hosted a Summer Olympics

1. New Zealand
2. Ireland
3. Romania
4. Hungary
5. Ukraine
6. Croatia
7. Cuba
8. Azerbaijan
9. Philippines
10. Serbia

Hong Kong level with Philippines but I'm not too sure if they count as a country or part of China.
