Other than just frying one's body, is peaking a physical thing or a mental thing?

I say its mental. No point in timing peaking, just train smart for the event/s that matter.

No question doing back to back grand tours take a toll - one grand tour takes a toll, but other than this ride 20 days in a row - does it matter?

FWIW most coaches I've known would say that training/preparing smartly for a particular event = peaking ;)

I'd say that peaking is a bit of both. IMO it involves timing your physical performance as well as getting your mind ready for the all important event. Everyone has their own way of doing this and focus differently on various aspects of their preparation.

yep!

And choosing a limited number (depending on recovery time) of 'particular' events is necessary.
