3rd division Spanish football isnt exactly Sunday League. How is Perreiro going to be able to get the strenght, skill, speed to play for a 3rd division team

You make it sound like cyclists are useless athletes :(

He does not have to. He can fall way behind and hope that those with better strength, skill, and speed are DQed.

Why not, just because he races bikes doesnt mean hes not a decent footballer. Michael Schumaker is considered good enough to play 2nd division (well was until he got older)

You think these guys can take on the beasts of football ;)

Perreiro has spend the last 15 years building up intense Pain endurance, Stamina and climbing ability.

This comes at the expense of strength, build and i would say sprint speed. Its also a completely different exercise running sprints then resting than it is to maintain the same pace up a mountain.

But my point is more the fact that in Spain football is religion. There are millions of kids who grow up in football academies. For every one star Barcelona produce there are 10 who fail and end up in 2nd or division Spanish football. Same with all the other clubs. These people have grown up at the best academies, playing every day for their whole lives, so im surprised that Perreiro can cut it at their level.

Perreiro is 33 years old. In cycling that may be the end of your peak, but in football thats past it.

I agree with on3m@n@rmy that clinic plays its part.

You'd be surprised by how many Spanish cyclists played football in the past(not on a professional level). It's part of their culture I suppose.

Pereiro has nothing to achieve in cycling anymore anyway. He won far more than what he's capable of in cycling. He should be glad, and he probably is.

Contador plays soccer

They named a soccer field after him in the city where he grew up

I'm sure Oscar would do fine. Sure not right away, but with time.

Its only up untill quite recently when pros hung up the wheels in November and done skiing, or tennis or something else during the winter.

Pereiro is a reasonable soccer player, he played it in his youth. Good enough to play league football? Maybe not, but it's a good publicity stunt for a local team for him, may help to get a few fans show up and get a bit of newspaper coverage; teams outside La Liga often struggle for coverage and attendance at matches is very poor for many teams... even if he just gets trotted out for the final 5 minutes of a handful of games, it's a bit of exposure that the team would otherwise never have got... and it's not like Pereiro was going to make many more headlines as a cyclist, as injuries and age have curtailed his career, and frankly he'd achieved more than he could ever have imagined he would given his talent level. Why shouldn't he have a bit of fun playing soccer?

He's a world-class athlete who at some point likely chose cycling over soccer, just as many here in Canada choose between hockey and something esle (football, cycling, baseball, whatever).

He won't do any better than Jordan playing baseball though.

Apparently he'll alternate between training with the first team and the feeder team, so he might well not ever get to play in 2nd B division. It's just a publicity stunt and Pereiro having some fun, like Libertine said.

Well, Pereiro said that when he was younger it was his dream to be in the World Cup, so he probably has been playing football for a long time just as everyone else playing in division 3.

What about Alexandre Vinokourov the grizzly bear from Kazahkstan. Can he not maintain a top notch climbing ability and still be up par with "beastly" footballers?

Footballers depend on their ability to play the game of football. Their physique isn't that amazing to begin with. And for every footballer claiming cyclists are weak, there's always Andre Greipel to prove them wrong. :D

Jordan playing baseball. Now that was funny. Of course he was only doing that to cool down all that gambling accusations.

No, he actually did it to honor his father who had been murdered in the past year. Apparently his father was big baseball fan and his father knew that one of Jordan's dreams was to play professional baseball. At least that is my recollection of what motivated his baseball adventure.

you might be a bit right but for evey andre greipel in the sports there are at least 2 ballaks, 2 C. Ronaldos, a few Adrianos Etc. In cycling not every team has the luxory of having a Boonen or hushov talent.

Football is essentially about running and sprinting ... don't know if pro cyclists do a lot of that in their workouts?
