Teams & Riders Peter Sagan discussion thread.

Stephen Roche, of all people, writing for Sky Sports of all people, outlines Sagan's quandary:

In the sprints he is fighting a losing battle because he has not got the fast finish to match the likes of Mark Cavendish, Marcel Kittel or Kristoff, and equally, he hasn?t had the team to give him any sort of lead-out. He didn?t have that at Cannondale and given that Tinkoff-Saxo are so focused on general classification, you would think he won?t have much of one there either. Not one to match Etixx - Quick-Step or Giant-Alpecin anyway.

Similarly, in the classics or rolling races, rival teams seem to have wised up to his threat and figured out ways to thwart him.

If he tries to attack solo, he isn?t given the same amount of rope as lesser riders and teams unite to shut him down. Likewise, if he gets away in a small group, nobody will work with him because they know he will beat them in a sprint. He can?t win. He?s a victim of his own breadth of talent.

In short, Sagan needs to start using his team mates in a way he wasn't able to do at Cannondale. It will be interesting how that pans out this spring.

When we talk about Sagan's teammates we are talking about Breschel and Bennati, yes? So I could see someone being there to help when it counts this spring but who is leading him out for sprints at the tour? Is he not the type to need a leadout like that in a bunch sprint can he make his own way better?

I doubt he'd do any better in a proper group sprint with a lead out than he could following wheels, so there's probably no point providing a lead out.

sagan at the tour will be looking for the green jersey.. not to be the sprinters we remember. more important that beating the specialists is to gather points and he is perfect for that

Well, after todays stage, I can tell that sagan has finally got some management from his team. I can't really remember when was the last time sagan took it easy in flat finish. It doesn't matter if it was due to mismanagement or due to the fact, that he was the only rider that could make the difference in cannodale(which is actually sort of mismanagement too)

From yesterday

Of course, Peter is not satisfied with being 5th on the stage, as he would normally win a stage like this. But I believe it?s time to give him a short respite from having to compete for stage wins on every single stage to let him recuperate properly after his crash in Qatar. We have an ambitious setup in 2015 and we want the wins, but we must take a bit of pressure off his shoulders?, comments Sean Yates

Never understood why Sagan is so popular. He's just a Slovakian Simon Gerrans.

Not really but keep thinking that if you like. Gerrans hasn't actually won any sprint classification jerseys at any grand tours that I know of. Gerrans isn"t actually winning any bunch sprints versus the best sprinters in the sport (not that Sagan has been lately but still...). Gerrans doesn't figure in the cobbled classics as Sagan can.

Edit: ...and most importantly, what Netserk said.

He's basically been the opposite of Gerrans in his career up to now. He's done loads of work in races, is very visible in making moves almost every time he rides and has tried to win in several different ways.

He's also made nowhere near the most of his talent so far - the opposite of Gerrans.

I wonder how he does at Strade Bianche this year. (According to this site he should ride there. As you would expect, after being runner-up twice in a row.)
Maybe Sagan and Kreuziger could help each other at the classics.
I'd guess Kwiatkowski will be there to defend the win from the last year.

I read that he doesn't ride Strade (and neither does Kwiatkowski).. The link you posted also says he will ride Amstel and Li?ge, so I wouldn't take it serious.
