Ok I know that majority of you knows that but anyway. Yestarday Eurosport commentator called Peter Sagan Slovenian National Champion, that really got me angry.
He is not, he is Slovakian:eek: Slovakia independet state now from ex. Czechoslovakia, Slovenia ex Yugoslav republic.
Although even Slovenian goverment wanted to changed name and national flag cos they are almost indentical with Slovakia, and guess what other reason? Lot, a lot of postcards goes in Slovakia and vice versa.

It's not like it's the first time they have messed up somebody's nation. They've called Rein Taaramäe a finn many times, and I haven't made a new thread for all of them. They even corrected the Peter Sagan nation yesterday afterwards.

When it comes to identifying people from eastern and central Europe, if they can get it wrong, they will get it wrong.

What did they want to call Slovenia instead? 'We're-more-German-than-Slav-land'?;)

When was this?

EDIT: married to a Slovene-born Croat-Macedonian and love the mountainous little place and therefore reserve the right to slag the place affectionately.

By far one of the worst posts ever posted in this forum.

I would be nearly ashamed to have to share a country with the Bayrischreiter, but glad that he is from Bavaria. Free-state Bavaria.
Has nothing to do with Germany and no one really gives a **** about their propagated awesomeness and independence.

I think he was joking, fellahs. I personally know a number of Slovenians who joke about their little country, too.

It's easy to intepret things with alarm when it comes from a German. If we want to be consistent, we should also be alarmed when anyone English, French, Spanish, Portugese, Dutch or Belgian expresses a culturally patronising comment.

Nice Yugo combination. :)

CN is just as bad about country identification. It can't tell the difference between Moldova and Moldavia.

Michael Jackson once turned up in Bucharest and announced he was very happy to be in Budapest.

Yes there is.

Moldova is the independent state and former Soviet Republic.

Moldavia is the region of north eastern Romania.

Moldova and Moldavia have been used historically to refer to either the principality or the wider geographical area, but they are now used to refer to distinctly different areas.

To use Moldavia when referring to someone from Moldova is wrong. It is akin to describing Greg Henderson as Tasmanian, or Thomas Voeckler as a Walloon.

Stingray - I was going to ask if you were married to Tito :)

...

OK then. I thought that you think that there are two countries or something.

Moldavia the region is marked yellow on this map and encompasses Republic of Moldova and parts of Romania and Ukraine.

I don't think that any TV cycling commentator will (or even should have to) know the difference. Slovenia/Slovakia, they should.

The Romanians and Moldovans I know use them interchangably so I have no idea which places they're really talking about when they talk about them. So it's a gray area

Perhaps the problem is compounded by the fact that the Slovak word for Slovakia is "Slovensko".

The Slovenian language is known in Slovenia as slovenščina, while the Slovaks call their language slovenčina.

Slovenes are South Slavic, Slovaks are West Slavic.

A similar confusion arises between the South Slavic Serbs, who speak "Srpski", and the West Slavic Sorbs, who speak "Serbski".

The languages are not especially closely related by Slavic standards, but their similar self-descriptions lead to confusion.

I think it depends who you are talking to and their age. Afterall, some (of a certain age) might describe said rider as being Bessarabian. At a professional level its easier to use Moldova for the Republic and Moldavia for the Romanian region to avoid confusion as to what you are talking about.

During the nationals Sagan was referred to as being Czech at one place. Can't help but thinking if that's actually worse...
No country which has gained independence from another country likes to be continuously seen as part of that other country...

You know, there is one even more interesting think. If you refer to something slovak, in slovak language it's "slovenské", and if you refer to something slovenian, in slovenian it's also "slovenske".
F.i. Phrase "Slovenské/e železnice" is common for slovak railways in slovak an slovenian railways in slovenian.
Crazy. But yes, otherwise we don't understand each other, our languages are completely different.

Always nice to see two countries go their separate ways without the nationalist hatred BS. Unfortunately Czechs and Slovaks are a relatively rare example (and even then I assume there must be some fringe loonies who do hate the other side).

From my experience of living in the Czech Republic I can say there is no chance of any violence - mainly because neither the Czechs or the Moravians would ever do anything that might disrupt beer deliveries:)

very true :) when i lived in prague the biggest conflict i could imagine between the 2 (and in fact i took part in) were the beer estafettes.

Yeah. Didn't they settle their border issue by a vote or something?

Or am I confusing it with something else...?

I really do not know how they settle it, but I know how we did it.

P.S. That red star is really hurting my eyes:mad:
