Lol. I know a community of ex-yugoslavs in my hometown, most of them live here for more then 20yrs, and they pretend like as if Yougoslava never quit. A group of friends from Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia a and I hope I'm not wrong, one guy is Kosovo Albanian, or at least he's from Albania itself.
But the same goes for old Czechoslovakia - we still have common tv-shows, if we meet somewhere outside our countries, somehow we feel to belong together, in fact, Slovakia has never quit with czech culture - most of the books in the shops are in czech (it is not necessary to translate, we understand czech perfectly), movies are in czech... and happy for that.

And do the Czech's understand Slovak perfectly? I ask because the Portuguese (or Portuguese speaking people) tend to understand Spanish fairly well (or better), but it's not the case for Spanish speaking people when it comes to Portuguese. At least this is what every Brazilian that I've met has told me.

I asked if the Czechs and the Slovaks didn't settle their border-issues by a vote. When obviously I meant settled in past tense. Amazing how much difference in meaning one missing letter can make...

For peoples in Eastern Europe, that is. Those who suffered under that symbol until recently.

But, this is bicycling forum, so...

What do you people think, who is the best cyclist from one of the countries that TV commentators get confused about?

Please don't take the ignorance of TV sportscasters too seriously. Their job can be difficult, knowing how to pronounce names from Finnish to Estonian to Afrikaans, to Chinese to Portugese to... the whole world. Knowing geography as well is a lot to hope for. Nothing personal.

Dude are you working for some Institute, you are so wrong about understanding those issue, sorry but:eek:
Hey why do not you take a visa and move to North Korea, i am sure that you are going to have great time there if loving communism:cool:

P.S. Send us a post card;)

Did I say I agreed with them? No I did not. However, I have heard plenty of people (normally the over 50s) say that things were better before 1989. That is their opinion and not one I necessarily I agree with. I also know people in their 30s say the same thing as well. I also know plenty of people who have no desire to go back.

I know exactly what the regimes did and how they behaved, I also recognise why some people felt those times were better. It is easy for those who have done well since 1989 to condemn those who look back, but I bet you didn't see you savings wiped out by hyper-inflation, or your pension be reduced to nothing, to be told that the factory was closing and no there weren't anymore jobs for someone of your age (over 50).

I also know enough to know what the situation was before materially, look at the levels poverty, disease, infant mortality, illiteracy in the region in 1939. While you may not agree or approve of their methods, the fact of the matter is that the communists electrified pretty much every village in region, improved mortality rates, increased literacy, improved water supplies. For many people who came from the countryside they don't and didn't care how these things were achieved. Hence the nostalgia.

I also know the other as well thanks. I've got friends who were dissidents, friends who were arrested, beaten, jailed, exiled. I've seen just how badly ****ed up people have become when they came out of jail.

So before lecturing me, just tell me, was my friend who was gang-raped in Bosnia and watched her brothers being shot - do you think she is wrong for thinking that things were better under Tito? Tell me what she 'doesn't understand about the issue?' or my friends who were forced to become refugees in during the wars? Do they 'not understand the issue' when they lament that things were never the same once Tito died?

Przemysław Niemiec

He's Polish, but his last name actually translates as "German". :)

It's not like it's the first time they have messed up somebody's nation. They've called Rein Taaramäe a finn many times, and I haven't made a new thread for all of them. They even corrected the Peter Sagan nation yesterday afterwards.

great post. Ups the absurdity to higher levels.

No, you didn't. But, seriously, what's the point of even mentioning football clubs on the bicycling forum?

And of course the other most famous Pole in the péloton is Sylwester Szmyd, whose name is clearly a German name in Polonized transcription.

Same as Thomas Voeckler - German name, French cyclist; Patrik Sinkewitz - Slavic name, German cyclist; Tony Martin - English name, German cyclist; Murilo Fischer - German name, Brazilian cyclist; Roman Kreuziger - German name, Czech cyclist; Danilo Hondo - Italian name, German cyclist; Jérôme Baugnies - Walloon name, Flemish cyclist...

IIRC Martin is a common surname in Germany, right? Or even in East Germany, where Tony Martin is from.

I was hoping Szmyd would race in Utah, so I'd get a Polish banner, fabricate some Polish hussar's wings, and head up to Snowbird. Oh well, I guess I'll just start collecting feathers for next year. :D

Guys this is getting a bit ridicilous in here. Little bit of taunting, teasing joking and irony and one gets thrown out like a hungry dog from a buther's shop. What is this here the " no freedom of speech, all political correctness forum"? One almost get's the impression this forum is based on a server in North Corea:rolleyes:
