His form is as good as Terpstra's - Just the circumstances of races have made him play second fiddle.

So far he's been some way below Terpstra

In Harelbeke it was Terpstra and Lampaert being chased by GVA / Benoot with Gilbert getting a free tow for quite a long time. When Gilbert tried to jump across he got nowhere near. It was a similar story in Le Samyn - when Gilbert had his chance to go for the win he couldn't get rid of Gaudin but Terpstra could. Even Gilbert has admitted he's not got the same form as last year

Maybe rather than Gilbert trying to win Roubaix, Quickstep’s aim should be to help Terpstra win Liege.

Samyn was a numbers game and a matter of which attack would stick - Gilbert nearly got to Terpsta in E3 but played the team card - Because Gilbert states 'he's not at the same level' as last year doesn't = Terpstra is riding better than Gilbert.

Well exactly. The whole field is watching Alaphilippe and Valverde, so Niki goes up the road and there’s no one to chase him...

Isn’t he too heavy for that?

Probably.

Commentators mentioned him being lighter than ever though.

But nah, Liege doesn't suit him at all.

However, imagine the reverse scenario with Terpstra attacking the false flat after the Roche aux Faucons and Nibali taking him back and destroying him

Terpstra gets dropped like a stone on the climbs in Liege. No chance in hell.

Amstel however, I don't know, a good Terpstra could play a role

Hopefully PG is OK! Was he trying to avoid that white square on the ground? I know that they are saying that he overcooked the corner, but it looks like he is trying to avoid whatever that is on the road.

Report is fractured kneecap. Likely his season is over with that injury.

Just incredible that he climbed out, gave a thumbs up, and got back on his bike. Jeez, most normal people would have been curled up in the foetal position sobbing with pain and self-pity.

This sport may be messed up in a thousand different ways but the fortitude of the participants is still amazing.

Amazingly—especially considering how good Quickstep has been this year—this injury means that Gilbert will not get a victory this year. The last time he didn’t get a win in a season was 2002, when he was only a trainee in the autumn.

Gilbert is usually a very good descender. Unusual error for him. Could have been much worse.
IMO he reacted to that white square on the road (cant tell if its paint or something to cover a pot hole).

Why did Gilbert crash?

Why did Gilbert crash?

If you watch the clip on Youtube in slow mo it looks like he's following the line of the motorcyclist and all is well until suddenly a square patch of white paint at the road edge appears directly in his intended path which seems to spook him. Instead of counter-steering and leaning into the curve he remains upright and starts heading off his line. As he passes the square it looks like he could have hard counter-steered to get back to the necessary lean for that curve at that speed, but at that point he's already unclipped, braking and skidding. Target fixation, perhaps?

Well, Gilbert managed to get a win in his first race back from injury and thus keep his 16-year streak of getting at least one win per season alive.
