If there is any rider who doesn't ride tempo in the saddle it is Evans. The broken elbow hampered him far more than most because he habitually climbs out of the saddle and not just to accelerate like the others. Just witness the contrast between him and Basso in the Giro. I immediately noticed even early on the Madelaine that Evans was staying in the saddle when the pressure went up even before he was dropped. Even has he got dropped he was in the saddle, this is so out of the ordinary that it was clear something was awry.
