I know CN are sly thieves who are trying to take over the world etc etc

But after I mention installing ad-block in the mod thread, I then refresh and on my adblocked browser the ad in question comes up..

WTF?

Easy now, I'm just a mod I can't do anything about it.

Some of us that are not mods have been doing something for some time now. Too bad no one has gotten it :D

That is why you's now see the ads you see popping up now (not that I have ever seen an ad on here since day one).

First off you need either Firefox or Google Chrome browser, once one of those is installed go the the appropriate link below and enjoy life ;)

FireFox AdBlocker Plus Add-On

Chrome AdBlocker Plus Add-On

Also, if you are using Firefox I also recommend the NoScript add-on:
FireFox NoScript Add-On

It takes some time to add all the appropriate scripts you do want to run on your typical websites but its well worth the effort in the long run and its the best fight against hackware on the internet as if any of your favorite sites do get hacked you won't have those new hackware scripts activated so you won't get hacked, Ha!

Key note: Save your CN Forum cookies and make sure to copy them in if you do use AdBlock/NoScript on a new browser profile or different computer, you'll be able to login as before with no fuss! Without them you'll have to remove adblock/noscript (or temporarily deactivate) to log in.

EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD ADVICE! I swear by no-script, and Chrome has a similar add-on, but with a slightly different name. I don't bother with ad-blockers any more - so that I don't deprive the website of that income. And the ads don't usually bother me. However, I don't allow the ad servers to run scripts tho (no-script controls).

Does this thing come on without me clicking anything?

Yes, unfortunately. That really gets in-yer-face, doesn't it? On my machine, tho, I just click on the page behind the ad, and it goes away, so far. What a pita. But, I will say, I like the way THIS ad looks. Canc is one of my fav riders. The next one, tho? Who knows what trash it will be.

i don't think it's a matter of respect or disrespect...imo, they want to leverage every opportunity to maximize the number of clicks to their main site which in turns helps the rankings and the commercial inflows. it was the very reason behind making everyone to pass through the main cn site if you wanted to log in.

all this is understandable but the latest aggressive pop up without giving a user the opportunity to close it and forcing one to wait till it times out, was plain ugly.

i, as some others, was not affected because i use 'no-script' and 'ad-block'. the only inconvenience i had when i checked the forum over my wi-fi enabled tablet. luckily, i mostly use my tablet for viewing the forum. so, a simple solution was to download another mobile browser -> disable script, and enjoy pop-up free viewing. i use my fire fox w/ad block for occasional posting.

do not disable script and/or flash in your main mobile browser b/c you won't be able to watch any video including the youtube.

Read the post just before yours ;)

I meant that I can't do anything for all the others (other than recommend AdBlock)

Only semi naked ferrand Prevot will work.

Opera with add-block plus + Ghostery and Opera's own add blocker running on Linux.. I've never seen a single add on this page, and neither can the page "see" which are my preferences though on this page are currently running the following scripts:

Double click
Google Adsence
Google Analytics
Outbrain
and Skimlinks

All flash applications work normally. ;)

The problem I've found is that if you have adblock and no script active to block the ads, if you have to for whatever reason log out of CN, you have to basically disable noscript and ad block to allow yourself to be logged in via the main page.

CN is like a very bad dealer and we're all junkies because if we had any sense we'd move to a site that doesn't treat us like ****s all the time.
