Turns out that he had a nasty infection in his left elbow (the one with the Titanium plates) because of the crash during the Tour.
That really had a big impact durning the 2nd half of the Giro, he wasn't able to put on jackets on the long descents because of lack of mobility in that arm. Yesterday he had a 3 hour long operation, the infection probably would have caused Gangrene very soon.

Cyclists are a different breed man, that's ridiculous.
 
He's also someone who's always climbing out of the saddle, so an elbow injury is reall bad for him.
Still finished 19th the final TT, super impressive.
In a recent interview he actually said TTs were the worst stages for his elbow because of the position, so his performances are even more impressive.
The surgery was supposed to take place mid-november anyway, but they anticipated it since the elbow was in really bad shape.
