That is just fantastic ,KB. That is a bike that screams to be ridden. The Hubs look great. Simple stealth look but very classy

Saracen Myst Carbon. I don't even ride FS bikes, I use my hardtail for downhill tracks (Yes, proper downhill including World Cup tracks!) but this is a good looking bike.

I have only been on one FS suspension bike and it was throwing me all over the place " I'm a rubbish mountain biker" The amount of tech that goes into FS bikes...The travel on the forks is crazy.

Yeah, it really makes me want to use Dura Ace hubs on my future wheel build for my fixed but I've been told they're not great in the wet, even with some seals in. Dura Ace hubs, H+Son TB14/Ambrosio Pavé rims and double butted ACI spokes (no Sapim CX Ray for me, I want to be able to take it into any shop in the world and get a spoke replaced that day!). Just need to find the money and probably wait until spring. If I bought them now I'd run them through the winter and ruin them! Thing is, on a fixed wheel is the only place I can afford Dura Ace bits so it's nice to use them :) The DA sprockets are seriously nice, lovely machining and silent. At £17 each and they will outlast about 3-5 cassettes in a Scottish winter it's hard to say no.

Cheers guys :D I'm now pretty much just a fixed rider now. I'll take the geared bike out if I'm riding something crazy steep (20%+ for short ramps, 15%+ for longer ones)/with the race pace guys where I have to have gears but pretty much everything I do at the moment I'm fine on the fixed and I just love it! The only sound you hear is the tyres on the road, my knees actually feel fine (you get out the saddle a lot more and out over the handlebars and then it's fine) and it's really helping me make gains in my riding. I'm already planning to do Paris-Roubaix on it...

Sapim Race spokes....CX-Ray along with DT Aerolites are a waste of $.

Cheers fella, appreciate the knowledge. I'll either stick to standard double butted or go with whatever Al decides. He only builds strong wheels with easily replaceable bits so I trust his judgement. The MTB wheels he built me use 2.3mm Sapim strongs I think, 36h rims too. Pretty sure they'll be the only thing left after nuclear war destroys the planet! He built a set for me and a set for a guy riding off-road from Moscow to Japan.

I'm not 100% certain but I'm sure that Specialized have always made a few one off frames for Boonen each year. Apart from the short period where QuickStep rode Merckx frames, Boonen has been one of Specialized's marquee riders for years.

I'm not 100% certain but I'm sure that Specialized have always made a few one off frames for Boonen each year. Apart from the short period where QuickStep rode Merckx frames, Boonen has been one of Specialized's marquee riders for years.

Hahaha, I really doubt that Ray! I just love riding it while most people just commute on them. The complete silence of the drive chain, just the noise of tyres on tarmac. The fact I can refresh the whole drive chain with top quality parts for less than some people have to pay for a cassette and that those bits will last years. The simplicity of riding and the harking back to the first days of bike racing all appeal to me greatly, it really is cycling in its purest form. It used to be that every club rider would have a winter fixed wheel apparently, but now that geared bikes are so cheap there's no real drive for it. For me, if I had to choose, I'd keep only the fixed wheel (and replace the geared bike with a CXSS bike ;) ).


I'm also self-aware enough to know that I ride it because:

A) I like to compete but I'm not quick enough. I make the occasional joke about if you're not first you're last but in reality that is actually how I think. Whenever I compete it's to win and I get annoyed when I don't. I fully understand the massive achievement of finishing on the podium, I also understand that for some people just finishing is an achievement, but for me if I'm competing then it's a win or nothing. Riding a fixed gear removes me from any competition as I'm the only person on one, I'm purely competing with myself. I don't care if someone with gears beats me on a downhill, everyone with gears should beat a fixed rider on a downhill. I also don't care on the hills as it's me versus the gradient (and I do beat a lot of geared riders anyway ;) ). It's become a very good way for me to satisfy a craving for competition without actually competing against anyone.


and B) I like the kudos of turning up on one when others are on gears, especially when there are known climbs that people are dreading or it's a long distance. Who wouldn't like having pretty much every rider in the club congratulating them and calling them a hard-man :) I can turn up on a club run with guys who absolutely destroy me on geared bikes and they're the ones calling me the hard man and saying they couldn't do what I do!

I think they broke more than one frame at La Vuelta.

They get the frames out of site ASAP . Its not good for business to see bikes fail. It happens more than you think, it's not something that gets spotlighted. The other thing that is possible is that company's could be trying out different carbon layups. So all would look as normal on the surface but underneath they could be riding a bike that feels very different from the one me or you could buy. Getting the pro's to test them.
My friend Ed who can repair just about any carbon accident/ crash damage has tired some interesting carbon layups on a few parts for my bike. it can increase stiffness /strength and less weight.
