Pros on TV adverts

It's that time of the year when cyclists get the chance to try and flog us some stuff but there's been some really poor efforts recently.

Ignoring Sir Chris Hoy's dire acting/voice over as he's not a roadie and every advert for Sidi cycling shoes to avoid discussions of naked oiled cyclists, I've seen quite a few today. (on German Eurosport)

Transitions lenses with Tyler Farrar, Who has got to be gutted he has to explain who is first despite the advert being shown during TdF coverage. Interestingly if they show it at other times in the UK it doesn't even say that, he's just random nameless guy in glasses.

Also, strangely, in Germany the voiceover goes "Ich bin Tyler Farrer, sprinter mit Garmin Transitions" which is unlikely unless Tyler's perfected his German accent.

Ok, I know what you're thinking -of course it's in German on German TV. Well explain to me why in the very next advert you've got Alberto Contador and Andy Shleck both speaking English (quite well actually) in a quite amusing advert for Specialised!?

Next is an advert for Focus bikes with the tag line "Bikes made in Germany" Why this is good is not explained, nor why the tag line is in English even though the rest of the advert is in German.

Finally the best advert of the lot is just before coverage begins again. (although it doesn't contain a pro cyclist) It's is for hair dye with the tag line "Doping nür für haare" and I thought the clinic was cynical!

That's kind of fun really. They should have contracted Bottle for that one. Mixed messages to get you thinking.

I remember listening to a lufthansa advert in german which finished with a comical "lufthansa, theres no better way to fly" in english, so its often they use english catchphrases.

Me, i am never affected by any adverts, and i see them all as cheap anyway but these cycling ones are especially crap true.

German adverts often contain english to make them sound more upmarket and unique... strange but true. And unless alberto has chosen a german voice over, its unlikely he would give permission to have the advert translated.
But I will never ever ever buy Garmin transition lenses as long as i live, this advert has annoyed me to the point of hating my tv for the last 4months or so of cycling coverage.

like the Salice glasses advert best - looks like they had a budget of 50 euros to get some footage of Garzelli - (who was the face of a major Italian fashion house at some point)
Cycling or just a parked bike seem to feature a lot in car adverts - the subliminal message being if you buy this car its like cycling from a health/eco point of view (which it cleary isn't)
The 1973 advert made by Ridley Scott has been voted the best-loved TV advert in the UK : 'Boy on a bike' for Hovis bread was set against Dvoraks New World symphony .
This has recently been recreated by Queen Victoria (love her breakfast at tiffanys advert)
Other classics have been PG Tips with chimpanzee's (can you ride tandem?) and Yellow Pages (I told him about that saddle)
Worst and least missed adverts were those by Kelme, why make cycling shoes and sponsor a cycling team in order to advertise football and motorcycle boots?
Of the current pick the Specialised Contador versus Schleck wins hands down but Salice would be my pick

Ok, I know what you're thinking -of course it's in German on German TV. Well explain to me why in the very next advert you've got Alberto Contador and Andy Shleck both speaking English (quite well actually) in a quite amusing advert for Specialised!?

Of course there won't be consistency between different TV ads since they're not all made by the same people. It's simply a reflection on the difference in how different ad departments in different companies have chosen to best promote their product.

my favourite ads of all time were the recent belgian QuickStep posters featuring Boonen, Bettini et al (several national champion jerseys + worlds) in a range of camp poses - always with one of them clutching a piece of cheap laminate flooring

It's only a minor part of the advert, but what irritates me is the bike he gets on. That shows what audience they are targetting and I am therefore making the assumption they are not to be used in race situations.

Worst one by far! Pippo Pozzato naked, all oiled up and only a pair of cycling shoes in front of his private parts does not make me want to buy those shoes.
The one with Contador is slightly better but still pretty bad, white tuxedos are just not my thing I guess.

I find that one pretty well done and effective. Appeals to both cyclists and people who just one cool sunglasses. I never knew what "Transitions" was but now I see it all the time - which is kind of annoying. It's also on in France, where it goes "Je suis Tyler Farrar, sprinteur de l'equipe Garmin-Transitions ..."

I find that one pretty hilarious because the speaker has a pretty strong German accent, so that it sounds like "Focus - Beiks mäit in Tschermany". Maybe they should have stuck with all German after all. Is it even aired anywhere else other than on German Eurosport? But as someone rightfully said earlier English slogans are cooler, catchier, etc.

In France AG2R has some pretty cool ones: "Our performances are collective - AG2R, the opposite of being alone in the world" (AG2R is an insurance company).

There is one where a lonely AG2R rider is being chased by an angry looking dog, next scene 10 AG2R riders chase the dog.

In another one an AG2R rider climbs the podium, and when the lady kisses him and wants to give him his prize, you see 10 other AG2R riders behind him.

The third one starts with an imitation of a live comment "Yes, I am here with a rider from AG2R, who just had a puncture ...", then you see 7 people (among whom at least 4 good looking women) jump out of a car and perform a "box stop" as in Formula 1: they hold an umbrella over his head, wipe his sunglasses, etc.

Ditto that, Susan. Lovely fellow by all accounts, but there's only so many times you can tolerate seeing it.

Liggett saying "Alberto Contador" as Farrar wins and then the editors cutting it just before Tyler hits a pedestrian at the end.

What really deserves a scream is the avalanche of LA commercials that are aired on Versus. Any commercial break usually contains back to back LA pushing Michelob beer, FRS sports drink, Nike, Nissan, and Radio Shack! and that's besides Versus pushing him for (versus)station promos as well. Too Much. Way, too much. It's made me move to eurosport when I can.

Sidis one is actually okay.

Compared to the other one when he is in leather bike jacket confused is petting his saddle and remembering his past victories.

That one is really cringe-worthy.

It's not even that the Transitions commercial is that irritating in itself. It's the ridiculous number of repetitions. Today on Eurosport, every commercial break began AND ended with "I'm Tyler Farrar, sprinter of team Garmin Transitions, during a race I need perfect vision".

While the white tux i only saw once during the whole etape.

Maybe there is such a thing as bad publicity. I know that if anyone ever offered me Transition Lenses, my immediate reaction would be "Nooo, go away!!"

My husband hates that one, he thinks it is really stupid to see someone in white tuxedo and barefoot.

I always holler when I see the Pozzato ad: "There's that naked man again!!!!" That gets a lot of attention around the house.....

also agree that it is stupid to get the guy to do the comercial and then have his voice dubbed (subtitles anyone?)
I guess the Focus german accent is on purpose, I find this funny.
the oily naked Pozzato is disturbing, but not as much as the old Sammy Sanchez - Alberto Contador playing spin the bottle with a Sidi shoe. Not that there's anything wrong with that (Seinfeld reference)
