So it would pretty much seem to be that the UCI has no interest in cycling itself anymore, and just wants to make a ton of money from some Qataris who were willing to throw some spare change towards Switzerland.

I still don't understand why you'd want to have a world championships in a place that is so hostile to outsiders (arguably more so than China, and if you look closely, you'll see it's true) and is such a car centric society, which doesn't have much of a sporting culture at all.

Lol, just because you're a northern classic specialist doesn't mean you can't stand the heat. Boonen has won 20 stages and the overall 4 times. He always says he rides better in the sun.

Come on! Tom is a northern classics rider and considering that he is from Belgium means his body would be more acclimatised to colder conditions than hot conditions. The Spanish and the Australians would be better suited to the hot weather provided considering that those countries have a warmer climate.

Yeh ok... So they will be building climbs?

Going to be funny to see no crowds there and then have all the "what a fantastic event it has been".

Ferminal, by saying "innovative solutions" they mean replacing people with camels on the course.

All I can say, is the next couple worlds better be hilly and exciting to make up for the complete bore that the 2016 worlds will be.

Seems UCI still doesn't have a clue on how to promote the sport of cycling.

What a dumb idea. UCI is all about the money and again does not think about the (lack of) fans and it's affect on the event.

both true and not to mention the fact that having a Worlds outside of Europe is not fair to the riders and ensures that some riders will miss it. look at track worlds this year, no Iljo because of the distance from Europe. In Valkenburg right now it is great to see smaller teams that qualify to be at worlds being able to make it there and compete on small budgets, it is great to see so many women's teams and support for individual women to compete, this will all be gone with a Worlds in Qatar. disgraceful, Pat McQuaid must GO!

Giant wind turbines could be built in case its calm weather during the race. That will also help cool the riders.

They must find a way of incorporating sand dunes during the race, like with enough glue we could have a Strade Bianchi style off road section on the dunes.

Nice of the UCI to not even mention that Bergen was a candidate too.

I wonder if Qatar would have gotten the race if they had some serious anti corruption laws.

For that matter, If switzerland took an interest in how the organizations based their conducted themselves.

they can make the stadiums colder. And even if they dont, 90 minutes of football is not the same as an endurance shootout in the deserrt.

They built an indoor, year-round ski slope ffs. Having a cooled soccer stadium in Summer is going to be a no-brainer.

I would love to see a night race along the coast with lots of wind. If it's windy Qatar doesn't need mountains, hills or cobbles to derive an awesome racing (the latest example is the 4th stage of Tour of Qatar 2012).

A norwegian journalist said on twitter that there are rumors in Limburg about the Qatari delegation being there to study Cauberg in order to construct a similar hill of their own

Are they getting advice from the people who built the Cauberg?

Yes! Lets make them go into the sand and up the sand dunes. Probably next to creating climbs and giant winds its one of the only ways that this race could be made interesting. Can you imagine an entire peloton hitting the sand at 30 miles and hour? :D

With a proposed parcours passing right by my apartment, even. I could have seen them go by without getting out of my chair.

If Pat stays in power I fear the WC will never visit any of the traditional cycling countries ever again.

Last few WC hosts have been stupid and corrupt(Qatar/USA).

2017 will probably be Monaco, 120 laps of 2km.
