Makes me wonder if it was some sort of unknown congenital defect. Do riders have to do any sort of physical each season?

On paper, yes, but new heart issues can arise due to respiratory infections.

Hoping for the best possible outcome for Daan.

According to the French media, he had a previous instance in '14 but subsequent tests showed "nothing wrong". Hope he's OK.
Sounds a lot like the Russian domestic biathlete who collapsed and died in a national cup race last year. One of her friends explained how she'd had a previous issue flagged up by the medical team in screening, they'd done work with her, special exercises and things, things seemed to have resolved, and cleared her to return to competition, and a few months later she had a heart attack mid-race just as happened to Myngheer.

I mean, Daan was only 22. Terrifying. An absolutely terrible weekend for the sport.
