Evans > Gesink in the Tour 2011

Nothing speculative about that

Sure, everything is 20/20 in hindsight. But again, you are under the false impression that I said Gesink wa sone of the favorites. I just said he might have had a shot. That would have been his best shot at it. That's all. I don't see how that concept is so hard to grasp.

And I just said he couldn't have won the Tour so far in his career like Oscar Freire said. What's so hard to grasp about that? I'm only having a go at Oscar Freire here, not you guys ;)

And of course I'm speaking in hind sight... That's why my post said nothing about the future.

Sigh. My reaction was not to Freire's comment but to your reaction on that comment which in turn Timmy reacted to before I did eventually. This is getting really tedious. Even my words are getting twisted now in my attempt, in vain, to explain this to you.

Jeez Spine, you're arguing with a wall, surely by now this should be obvious.

He could not beat Contador in the Tour 2009
He could not beat Contador/Andy in the Tour 2010
He could not beat Evans in the Tour 2011

Please explain to me how Gesink could have won the Tour already? I didn't know I could get so many Dutchies angry by a simple statement. I doubt Gesink thinks he could have won the Tour already and if he said it in an interview people would criticize him here for it.

Indeed. I'm not Dutch though, but I am very stubborn regardless. I do currently live in the Netherlands, so maybe it rubbed off on me. ;)

Even I gave up some point last year

It would seem that I still have to come to that realization, even after racking up quite some arguments with said poster in the relatively little time I've been a member here vis-a-vis you guys.

Other than depending financially and for international relations on the Netherlands we don't have much in common with the Netherlands. Completely different culture and people. Aruba - where I'm from - isn't even part of the Dutch Antilles anymore since 1986. Our Educational system is practically the same though some things are different. For example I graduated from the V.W.O. in Aruba. We do have Dutch nationality though, which makes it easier to continue our studies after secondary school in the Netherlands, which is why I'm here at the moment.

Lol. Not quite. My uncle used to be a well-known athlete in Aruba. He participated and often won several marathons and such. He got me into cycling and we used to watch the tour together every year before I became knowledgeable about cycling outside of the tour. Aruba is very Americanized due to the big flow of tourism coming from - mostly - the States. Inevitably that meant that Armstrong was my childhood hero in cycling, I'm almost afraid to admit that. However, seeing as when I first got into cycling I used to only watch the tour I can be excused...? :p

Same for Dutch guys I guess... Armstrong or Boogerd. I'd say Armstrong still is far more of a household name over here than Robert Gesink.

Really? Now that I was not aware of. I knew there was something odd about Mart Smeets' borderline obsession with Armstrong though. :D For me it's a logical decision to root for Dutch cyclists now because in Aruba the sport is definitely not at a high level. Though that is the same for most sports in Aruba except for baseball - which again illustrates the Americanzation - and wind surfing. Thus, my Dutch nationality comes in handy in that regard. I have at least some sense of Dutch pride. :p
